What's my next knife?

Post by inplainsight » Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:38 am

So I found myself surfing eBay and KnifeCenter, wondering which knife to buy next.

I already own the following

1. Smith & Wesson M&P MAGIC MP5 Assisted (http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/SWMP5L ... ow-Breaker)
2. SOG Flash II Folding Knife Assisted (http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/SOGTFS ... RN-Handles)

I'd like the next one to be an assisted opener, with a 3.5 or 4" blade.

I like the S&W's weight, the thumb stud and its aluminum feel, but hate that the main internals are plastic (they have already developed play after 3-4 months of use) and the blade needs to be sharpened after minor use.
The SOG is not bad for daily carry, but the handle is is not comfortable and it does not have the nifty thumb stud.

What should I get next? (Moin, Mack, I know you guys know EXACTLY what I want)

Wait and see what gets released at the SHOT Show and then decide.

Need to know your budget for just the knife.

Thanks Mack. I'm looking for something under $150.

I saw a few knives introduced by SOG, but wasn't impressed with any.

You're welcome but when it comes to folders I think you will be better served by Choombak, Slingshot and Moin.

For what it's worth, I like Spyderco knives and their trademark hole as an opening device instead of a stud. Keeping in mind your budget and required blade length I would suggest a Spyderco Para Military or Military or Police 3 as some options to consider.

Go for a Benchmade and don't even look at others.... Spyderco should be your second option if at all you need an option.

Hi,

Well if it were me I would go with Rockstead Honzukuri :D

http://www.rockstead.jp/collection/deta ... gory=knife

IMHO Its a things of beauty, and unfortunately not within the budget specified, by you :(

SPYDERCO/BENCHMADE both excellent choices, do let us know what you decide to go for eventually.

Hi Blade Gurus... after going through all previous discussions regarding knives & flash lights , I have also been infected with the virus. I think knives & flash lights go hand in hand with guns. Before I joined here, my friend from USA presented me with a folder by Boker ( X-15-T.N. Solingen. Germany) written on the blade & a Bear Grylis folder. The Boker was so sharp that I once shaved with it. Now with the limited knowledge I have told him to bring the following knives. Am I right in my selections ? Please advise. He will come in April.
1) Puma skinner with stag handle
Model: PU 116393
2) Buck alpha hunter fixed blade
Model: BU194
3) Esee 4
4) Cold steel recon 1 folder

During my stay here in this forum, I have also acquired folders from
CRKT (Hammond Cruiser) & Ka-Bar
Agma folder ( help from Bruno 22)
& a S&W Home Security folder. After watching me, even my son has brought me a couple of cheap
Chinese folders from his pocket money.

Thanks for all the replies.

Mack, I looked at Spyderco. Very neat looking knives, but do they make assisted openers?

Pistolero, the Honzukuri is drool worthy, what do these retail for? I couldn't find it on Knifecenter or eBay.

TC, thanks for pointing me towards benchmade.

I liked the Benchmade 581 (http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/BM581/ ... um-Handles)

Any Good? Can the blade be easily sharpened?

As the topic was '' what is my next knife'' I was misled. Really Sorry for off the topic.

As far as I know Spyderco do not make assisted openers. You could check their website or e-mail them just to be sure.

Whilst assisted opening knives may tickle your fancy at present, bear in mind it's just one more mechanical part that could go wrong. The same goes for unnecessarily fancy locking mechanisms. A frame or liner lock works well and fast.

Have fun choosing and learning.

Yikes! With a knife that expensive, I'd have to hire a security cover for when I take it out
