Knives in the Movies

Post by Moin. » Wed Dec 26, 2012 4:53 pm

Love watching action flicks and love blades, so will try and see if I can capture a few screenshots of regular production blades used in the movies, some exceptional blades like the customs by Hibbens used in the Rambo Series of Movies or the customs from expendables etc will included. Will exclude fanatasy blades ( Conan the Barbarian Types :))

RAMBO- FIRST BLOOD

The First Knife is of course the "RAMBO" knife. With so many threads here in IFG as to where can I buy a Rambo knife in Kolkotta or where can I buy a rambo knife in Chennai, the blade that started the craze deserves the first place.

The Custom Knife for the movie was made by the Late James B Lile for First Blood.

Here's the link to the knife makers website,

http://www.jimmylile.com/history.html

You can buy the genuine deal for USD 3500 :)

Here are some shots from the movie ( love it, watch it every time it's on TV)

Great Post Moin for movie buffs like me... here is a list of some Movie knives that caught my attention and never left my memory.. see if you can find links of pics

1) The steel needle used by Donald Sutherland in Eye of the Needle, a spy thriller set against the background of WWII

2) The switchblade disguised as a statuette (an angel) used by the killer (forgot his name) in Wait Until Dark

3) The kitchen knife that was used as a throwing knife (it was actually a tactical throwing knife) by Steven Seagal in one of the Under Siege movies.. I am referring to the one where he is a cook on board a US Navy ship that is raised by Garry Bussy and Tommy Lee Jones dressed as a rock star.

4) The Sykes (it looked like a Sykes at least) Anthony Quinn used to hide inside his jacket in Guns of Navarone.

5) The sword that could worn around the waist as a belt (of course inside its sheath) that the hero (don't know his name nor much of the story) in a typical low budget martial arts movie Forever Mine.

6) The machete used by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies

7) The huge bowie with stag handle that John Wayne carried in The Alamo

8) The sword (straight katana) used by Rutger Hauer in Blind Fury where, as the name suggests, he is blind and kills all the bad guys

9) The compact Rampuri our very own Dharmendra used to carry in his hip pocket in Yaadon Ki Baarat

10) The big fixed blade with which Om Puri kills the villain in the last scene of China Gate

So much for now ... ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

Thank you Dsingh. I would you very grateful If you could post a picture of your khalsa khanjar. I actually looked up a reference book Indian and Oriental Arms and Armour by Lord Gerton of Tatton and could not locate any such blade from that era that matches your description. Since the history of Sikh Edged weapons is from mid fourteenth century there would be havy influence of Moghul and Rajput weapons I would assume. Sirohi is in Rajasthan, was once famous for sword making ( Katanaji where art thou ?). Like I said, if you could post one or two pics, will be more clear as I could not locate a blade of this description in any of the reference books I have.

I would be very keen to study more on Sikh Edged weapons, what exactly are Taksali, Ratoval, Dumalla Shastars. Will be thankful if you can provide links for further information on this.

Actually the origins of the tradtional kripan shape has always fascinated me, the recurve blade in the middle eastern Jambiya like bent scabbard.

I'll start a seperate thread on Sikh Edged Weapons once I am able to collate some good information and after some study on the subject.

Lollzzz TCda, there will be a lot of R&D for this thread, will surely look these up. You would see a lot of Kabars in most of the war movies right from the classics to Black Hawk Down. I actaully wanted to check our Platoon today but left my hard drive in office.

If I rememebr correctly Gil Hibben actaully made a bowie inspired by John Wayne's blade in the Alamo. Gerber Mark II was in a few scenes in Alien. How can you forget SOG Daggert worn by Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and so many. I have a good collection of old war movies, will look these up for Skyes, Kabars, Randall's etc.

As faor Rampuri the most famous is Raj Kumar from Waqt" Yeh Bacchon ke khelne ki cheez nahin, lag jaye to khoon nikal aata hai " :) :) :)

Moin jee,
Sirohi is not only famous for sword making but its size of swords were also different the Sirohi Swords r just tilted from last edge very minor tilt it gives it very powerful cutting force like a big sword rajputana Sirohi is 2 feet long sikh sirohi 3 feet litle more than 3 feet shape is same but is broader and handle of all Sirohi r small nowadays it is rather immpossible to find swordmaker for this type of sword I got it in 2008 but my dad gave it to some relative.Ratoval is a village in Ludhiana where swords r made but now very few persons can make traditional sikh swords all r just duplicate or recycled from chinese soft metal,Taksali Kirpans r traditiona Khalsa arms but it is hard to find one real very few experts r left as it is not profitable bussiness .I will try to post pics from mobile as I have problem in my mobile settings. Some people claims particular arm is Taksali one Taksali is also for Damdami Taksal whose swords were consisdered to be among the best but now they r also selling inferior ones just to make money.Another sword is Goliya a mughal sword of high officials and useful for quick strikes used by sikhs after Banda Singh Bahadur times sikh pointed weapons r mostly 17th to 19th century.Goliya is round shaped sword it is said it gets sharpened if u practice in oposite of blowing of wind makes loud whistle while swinging in opsite of wind Emperor Aurangzeb was said to be very expert in fighting with Goliya sword Emperor Akbar was found of double edged Khanda although discarded by all medivel armies due to its heavy weight but reintroduced by 6th Sikh Guru Hargobind ji and is consisdered sacred in Sikhism used in most sikh battles and wars.

Wonderful, thank you Dsinghsaab. If you know of any good links where I can read further on the subject, please post. We are going OT, let me gather some info on Sikh Edged weapons. Why don't you start a new thread with the pics you are anyways going to post on Sikh Edged Weapons. Would love to learn more from you and on the subject.

Thanks

If that guy ever tripped and fell.... or worse, if he took one of the rush hour electric locals leaving Howrah station, he would be in a world of hurt.
...or maybe that is why is face is so scarred. :)

Moin and dsingh, while there might be a resemblance to certain Sikh knives, one would think that considering the source, John Rambo's knife would owe most of its heritage to the Bowie knife.
