My new buy remington 870 super magnum .12 gauage

Hello ifgn,,

I am posting a picture of my new buy for geese hunting as i had only one shot gun which was cz 712 semi auto and i would need another.. so bought from gander mountain for $399 plus tax.. before buying this i did researched for months on internet and read reviews.. and finally decided on remington 870... looks like America is driven by inertia.. everyone recommended me remington 870.. I narrowed down my research to remington 870 and winchester sxp and benelli super nova .. and i rejected the winchester sxp as it had rotary bolt (means too many moving parts).. and secondly the reciever was made of alloy...(though it was the most beutifull shot gun out of three)...and the sales man himself told me that winchester has stopped making this gun any more.. so left with benelli..and after holding it i felt that the whole gun had a rattle.. means lose feeling and the fore end gave me kind if big thing feeling.. though the gun was really beutifull and had a magazine stop switch too, means you can stop the loading of next shell into the chamber and instead put ur different cartridge as needed in case you are hunting.. but benelli gave me a feeling of a bulky gun... so i concentrated on remington... this shot gun gave me solid feel .. with very minimal rattle.. and sleek design and not too bulky. and the action was smoother than the benelli and winchester sxp... so not thinking next minute i asked the sales man to go ahead with that... after buying i brought it at home and assembled and diassembled the whole shotgun.. easy to assemble but little difficult to diassemble.. but overall i am happy about this gun

Do you plan to use it on game like waterfowl etc?
If yes please let me know how it goes. I wanted to buy a winchester semi too but ended up with an extrema. However have heard nothing but praise about the winchester.
Remingtons arent popular in the uk. Since i really like remis, i request you to please post a report .

While I won't disagree with your choice as the 870 is my favorite shotgun for field use, I do have to make some comments about your comments.

The Winchester SXP is still being made. The rotary bolt, while it may equate to more moving parts is a tried and true action. To many people, the rotary bolt=very secure and safe lockup.
The Benelli Super Nova is actually not a bad shotgun, on actual use, but I really don't care for the Euro-boutique styling so much.

Still, I would have made the same choice for a first shotgun. As to disassembly, do it several times and you will be able to do it in pitch darkness after that. Its very basic.

I've owned several variations in 12 and 20 ga.

I hope that it has built in recoil reducing system.

A steady diet of 12 ga magnum duck loads will get to you after a while.

I choose this because of its dependability, its history, and simple and silly, and maximum availability of modifications..... the built in recoil reducing system comes in benelli and others, but remington has made thicker recoil pad to absorb the recoil which just costs $ 19.99(to be installed) and i have done minor modifications to that by adding 2 plus magazine extension and will be rubberizing the whole stock and fore end by painting plastic dip,to give it more pleasing look and attaching a remington logo sling , looks really beutifull... and a cantilever .12 guage rifled slug barrell, and a scope on that makes this gun a complete project.... will post pics on goose hunting before new year eve.....

Very nice, once upon a time I was planning to buy a shotgun for trap and I did some extensive research on this one. Lot of people recommended me the 870 but for hunting and not trap.

I would like to second Yogi's warning that a regular diet of field loads will rattle your teeth in the 870. Usually while hunting it is not a problem as you don't notice the recoil that much and you generally don't get to shoot all that much at one time.
If shooting trap, use competition loads, they are much lighter.

Some people do use 870's for trap. It's not as common as it used to be but it is still quite visible at the trap clubs. Remington sells a Wingmaster Classic Trap

When I was college in the 1980's, I spent my summers with a family whose five sons shot trap on a league and insisted that I shoot with them. I used a borrowed 870 trap gun exclusively but it had an adjustable butt pad, mercury recoil reducers, twin beads, and a custom rib. It had a very slick action and I don't believe it was ever cleaned or lubed apart from an external wipe down. Once I started using it, I would religiously take it apart and clean and lube it. I still have the trophies from those summers when I rode the coat tails of those guys to participate in winning several of the annual championships. I also borrowed it one season and used it to shoot a deer with a magnum length foster slug cartridge at a measured 265 paces ( Ok I got lucky

). I'm still good friends with that family and I still get to use that gun once in a while but my friend will not part with it

I was looking at the Remington 870 Express 12 ga mainly for its price point

Since I was very new to trap so didn't wanted to invest too much into the sport. The wingmaster is a great gun for trap.

However, I placed the trap sport on hold for a while and ended up getting the Marlin bolt action .22 which I love a lot

Trap and skeep .. may be someday .. someday
