Thank you very much everyone, particularly Timmy and Two Rivers, for your very informative and enlightening posts. I have learnt a lot about Eddystone rifles.

The dealer was not very clear about what what he considers a sporting rifle except that he associates military actions with full length stocks which this rifle does not have, This is his criterion for calling the rifle a sporting one. He mentioned that it is fitted with aperture sights and is in a like new condition. The price is likely to be in excess of $ 6,000. It would be possible to buy a genuine sporting rifle in India at that price.

Regards.

The original rear sight on both P14 and M1917 rifles is an aperture.

Hi Miroflex,

I own a m1917 Eddystone rifle. If you are about to buy one then I would like to tell you that you can check the month and year in which the rifle was manufactured. It is stamped on the barrel of the rifle. For example you can see E and 8-18 written on the barrel in the pic below. E stand for Eddystone and 8-18 stand for August 1918.

Mine rifle has R 11-18 stamped on the barrel.

Regarding brittle receivers on Eddystone rifles I would like to say that there is no problem with them. The rumour of brittle receivers started because some people when tried to remove the original barrel from the rifle, the receiver cracked. This has nothing to do with receiver strength. It's just that the barrel on them is so tight that it cracks if removed improperly.
