Any weapon, the owner will fire until it is safe to stop. You could have a three shot magazine, it would suffice in general. There is nothing wrong with wanting a five shot, or even a ten shot magazine.Ir-regarding the shooter's abilities, common sense dictates, the more chances you have, the more chance you will make it.There maybe immense pressure to make those three shots count, which could lead to misses.Having five or more can help with the pressure.
Regarding the above, a handgun or a rifle - Use whatever you have.

certainly sirs, i quite agree..i was alluding to the confined places such as alleyways, stairwells and such. The only negative for a rifle is that it's not a 'carry' weapon and thus it's effectiveness is limited to a great extent.personally, I would like nothing better than to sling a rifle on my back and ride a horse to work but i have a feeling, call it an intuition, that the not so gentle men in khaki might not take to the idea! :p
Of course as a deterrant a rifle is certainly more accurate and imposing and let's face it ,a handgun can't hold a candle to it in a firefight. However the very fact that i'd have to leave my rifle at home when going out late at night would be a major reason for me, at least, not to invest in one.

Far from it. Our situation and game laws do not provide the opportunity to become that proficient. The most I ever got to shoot at one setting were eight (caribou), and I had to reload since my BSA has a five round magazine. We don't have driven hunts, and one animal per permit per year, on most species.
For self-defense purposes, hits on target still trump shots available. And frankly, I don't envision having to defend my home against a horde of screaming zombies. If you can't hit your assailant, it won't really matter how many shots you have available. Though one more shot than your opponent has in his gun is always good.
Last but not least, mine is not a YouTube and armchair scenario. So my perspective is different from yours, and I see far too many shooters who want bigger magazines, rather then spend time developing their skills with their rifle. I have been on many hunts, with many people, and believe me, more rounds in the magazine did not equate to greater success. Just more noise and empty brass.

Afterall one doesn't get to be 75, living around guns and wild animals, no less,if one doesn't know what he/she is doing. My theory is, your experiences so far, are worth their weight in gold. In the future I will request other members to consider that before passing such facile comments as have been made above. Having said that, may i also say , sir Rivers, that the world has undergone many changes even in your lifetime, as i am sure you will agree, and we no longer have to consider skills such as tracking, hunting, accuracy or even the conservation of ammunition as 'practical' survival techniques . We , sir, are the children of the 'assualt rifle ' generation and therefore seek solace in the size of the magazine to compensate for a lack of skill with our rifles. I'm sure you will understand, if not agree to, that when one has been brought up on a staple of '30 round magazines' a larger magazine capacity , even on a sporting rifle, seems like a better insurance policy, at least on paper. May i also take this oppurtunity to reserve the right to learn a little from you about your experiences/anecdotes while shooting, tracking and hunting in the future. I find the 'old ways' to be more....charming and practical and would love the oppurtunity to learn a bit more about them, if and when you can spare the time. Thank you.Or you're that brilliant shooter in that video posted earlier :P[/quote wrote:

Not zombies but how about a mob during a riot? It is not like it has not happened before in India.TwoRivers wrote: And frankly, I don't envision having to defend my home against a horde of screaming zombies.

Raptor,
Rioters are more interested in looting than being killed.Rest assured,a couple of well placed shots from a rifle will make them lose interest very quickly even if they too are armed.

The point is - More shots = Good for self defense.Hunting is another fairly irrelevant debate in this country.
