You could call it a straightened Khukuri. A Bolo is a traditional Philipino knife and come in varying sizes and slightly differing shapes. Some of them do have a more pronounced curve along the spine but not as much as a Khukuri or even a Sirupati. (EDIT: I take that back as I just saw a pic with some mighty curved Bolos - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolo_knife )

BRK haven't announced the price but since it's made of 5160 and I have chosen the cheapest handle material and colour, it should cost between $175.00 to $200.00.

Mike Stewart is a big fan and collector of Khukuris and there should hopefully be a BRK version after he builds the Gladius (Roman battle sword) in 2013.

Hi Macky,

Thanks for the reply. Really love the handle on the knife, so this would be a camping/survival knife? Had sharpened my old Uncle Mike using a round stone and water. Will send you a pic and get to know if the edge is fine. I worked on it slow and stopped when it could cut paper. That should be good enough to open a snack food pack or slice fruit.
Really like your knife. Very beautiful do get the skull with the beret on it.

Regards,

Fatty.

Hi Dev,

I don't do survival, though I would really like to, because the so-and-so's I go with love their creature comforts at the end of the day, even when camping. It would be a general outdoor knife and would be used to clear a path or space to fish from. Something a $20.00 machette will do with elan but I cannot carry a machette inside my backpack the way I carry my Golok. Actually, that's a pathetic excuse. I like good knives but I should have remained content with the value-for-money ESEE line.

The handle and sheath are two things that I am circumspect about. I think the handle could have been a little longer. The handle does appear to have a slight palm swell and flared pommel (something I wanted the Golok to have) so I hope it feels good in the hand. Yes, I decided to go ahead with the order....

As for your knife, there's no way I would be able tell how sharp it is from a picture but send the pics nevertheless. There are degrees of ease of cutting paper. The type of paper being cut also matters. I don't mean to blow my trumpet but this is what someone who thought his knife to be sharp had to say, "Do let me come over once you have the new barkie.I wish to see you at work bettering the factory edge. The memory of those barkies slice paper like it was non-existent is still fresh upon me. I didn't quite know how bad i was until i saw how good you are." I genuinely do not consider myself an expert on knife sharpening, so you can imagine how much better it can get. It's a skill that is worth learning.

Hi Macky,

Is it harder for 550 steel to retain an edge? I will just check if that is the number written on the blade. I was gifted a beautiful knife sharpener (in fact two) by the good Doc but the recent house shift has effed things up. I just can't find the set amongst other things.
By the way do you agree with the Tao Te-Ching line,' Better to stop than over sharpen a sword...'
Is there such a thing?

Regards,

Dev

Cannot recall coming across 550 steel for knives. Could it be 440 and was there an A, B or C after the number?

Can you atleast recall the name of the knife sharpner?

Absolutely! It has also been discussed a few months ago. Will try and find the relevant thread/s.

Well, that's relative. Some can afford them and some cannot.

I am in the latter category. I sold off many of my old knives to complete the ESEE collection and then sold off most of the ESEE collection to fund the Barkies and then sold off many Barkies....

To give you an idea and to make Dr. J even more J  I started buying knives again after a long lay off on 17th December 2011. From that day to today, I have had 12 ESEEs and 11 Barkies, not counting the GB-II. From that stash I have retained 2 ESEEs (Izula-II and 3) and 3 Barkies (Aurora, Little Creek and Golok), so I have not been such a bad boy after all.

I doubt I will hold on to the GB-II as I have never felt the need for a medium-heavy or heavy wt. chopper and the Golok is just the sort of medium wt. chopper I require. Infact, I may even cancel the order for the GB-II after the price is announced and if I feel it's on the higher side.

It's just khujli and once scratched, it's sold to the big collectors and I look for something else to try out.

Mack The Knife... I salute your persistence and focus.

TC: Thanks but I don't see it that way. I am just enjoying myself trying out new knives and learning a bit in the process. I'd much rather be out fishing than focus on knives.

Over sharpening? What is that?

When the very edge of the blade is made so sharp that it could chip or roll or just loose that oversharpened bite in no time at all. You are then left with a working edge on that knife

It is pointless loosing metal and time working on an edge that is going to loose that extra bite quickly when used to cut something even moderately hard like soft wood, cardboard, card paper, plastic, etc. Now, imagine the sort of materials a sword came against in battle. Even the famed Katana does not use an 'oversharpened edge'. The reason it can slice through a human is due to the momentum of the blade and a hard and expertly honed and polished edge. BTW, Katanas use a Hamaguri-Ba (convex) edge.

What you saw and experienced was a good working edge that will work longer than an 'oversharpened edge'.
