A week ago I was discussing the compensation offered by the state govt. to the next to kin of those killed by maneating leopards.
Till very recently it was Rs 100,000/= (less than US $2000/=).
Is that the value of a human life in India? I wondered.
Cheaper than the world's cheapest car. Tata Nano.
Finally I read this news in today's news paper.
The Chief Conservator has increased the ex gratia by 3 times.
Nothing can compensate the loss of a human life in such a gruesome manner.
But this is surely a little more respectable than what they were giving earlier.

Shot my first maneating leopard tonight.Needless to say . It was a team effort.
Singh and IFG member Corbett 99 were alongside.
Walked up to 30 yards from the maneater and got it.
Story and snaps to follow.

P.S. : Thanks xl for your best wishes.
Unfortunately it had killed a 9 year old girl a short while ago, before we shot it, at less than 100 yards from the kill.

Prashant,
Congratulations!
Thank You for caring enough to take the time and for having the intestinal fortitude to follow through and take care of the problem. While nothing will bring back the victims and there is no consolation for the parents of the little girl and the others, I'm sure everyone in the area is breathing a sigh of relief.

I look forward to hearing the rest of the story.

Prashant,

Congratulations,my man! Kudos to your fortitude and perseverance. Knowing you, I am absolutely positive that this endeavour was conducted as conscientiously and ethically as possible. We would love to hear more from you. But, that is only after you have settled your nerves, spent time with your family and enjoyed this Deepawali.
