Dangerous Game
Hunting Africa's "Big Five" will always be an unrealized dream for most of us. For the ones who can afford it, it is an opportunity of a lifetime.
They are considered to be "Dangerous Game". There is a reason why they are called that.
Even a moments inattention can result in disaster. They cannot be taken for granted, even for a second.
I recently read a story that is a great reminder of the above.
In just a few words, the author is able to convey the excitement and stark terror of this hunt.

Re: Dangerous Game
Well, I call it a fair hunt.
If you are hunting any or every game, that's where we differentiate from cold hearted trigger happy punks to game hunters. Carrying fancy guns and high powered trucks don't make you a hunter, people who break their blood and sweat are hunters. Couple years ago my daughter shot a bear out of our hunting camper window and wrote a story in her class curriculum. Her teacher was ecstatic and asked her what we do to the bear ? Eat it, that's what the bear was going to do to us, said my daughter. I still remember the teacher's face like yesterday. So any hunt is a fair hunt, you just learn new things by trying hands on approach every time some thing new happens. And every hunt is a new thing - Haji

Whoa . Watching a lion charge in The Gost and The Darkenss was scary enough. Gawd these can still do some serious damage after taking in some much rounds from these big game rifles. THese Zulu warriors have some guts then to hunt lions with spears.
I have two very old books my grandfather brought for me when I was in school. One's is Shikar by Jamshed Bhutt and the other's intrestingly called Tips on Tiger Shooting. These have some nice Tiger Hunt Pics. I'll try photographing them and post..
Best

Nice one xl.
Like they say.
In most cases ......"Dangerous game" gets dangerous, only after the first shot has been fired.

Re: Dangerous Game
I read it a week or so back on AR. Hair raising. I am not much into DG hunting(Not knocking on those who do), unless it involves a problem animal or situation. Still!
The big kitty absorbed three shots from the mighty .458 Lott, one from end to end. Before that , one from the .450/400 through the lungs. My hat is off to her.

Vikram,
Don't forget she also had two wound channels through the heart!
Dr JK,
What would stop her, indeed?
Maybe Nagarifle's favorite 105 mm howitzer?

Re: Dangerous Game
Dear Moin,
You've got to read what Robert Ruark, the famous gun writer and a hunter from U.S. had to say for this Khan Saheb Jamshed Butt in an article he wrote in 60s in the gun magazine of which he was an editer. It's about his shikaar trip to India with Khansaheb. Not very praiseworthy I am afraid. Besides being a big game hunter himself,Buttsaheb also ran a Shikaar company in the days of yore. Have heard of Kenneth Anderson also being a great fibber, from some veteran hunters from that era from down south.

Re: Dangerous Game
While both lung and heart shots are sure killers, and preferred for game you are planning to eat; dangerous game requires a shot through the shoulders, brain, or spine. You need to immobilize the animal as well as cause internal bleeding, and broken shoulders are a sure way of doing that. Only if the animal were not aware of my presence would I be tempted to go for a lung or heart shot on anything that is likely to bite back.

I have heard a round through the nose or eye will drop big game instantly.
I would rather hit my target gently than miss hard.

Re: Dangerous Game
Not "through", but "up" the nose, and through the eye are both brain shots. If coming at the right angle and not deflected. Extremely lucky shots at distance, or a moving animal. Animals, especially the ones that bite, seldom pose for you.Skyman wrote:I have heard a round through the nose or eye will drop big game instantly.
