how thick should a blade be

hi guys im from tamilnadu i joined recently but ive been reading the posts for many years now im mainly interested in knives ,i have absolutely no use for it even then i like to carry one concealed everywhere i dont know may be the cold sharp blade gives me a lil more confidence that i need,rt now i have a double agent2 karambit its unconcealable and i have some heavy throwing knives(expendables effect) been practising on them lately another assisted karambit is on the way

i just have a doubt guys how thick should a blade be to stop a huge machete (aruvah local name) slashing at you, are there any edc folder that are that good u must understand the aruva is made of moulded iron sharpened to cut through a coconut from side to side like its a piece of warm butter ive hard the paracord is useless

Hi Praveen, A Very Warm Welcome to the "Sharp Forum" of IFG. Please do post pics of the knives you own, would love to see them.

Praveen you are referring to blocking and parrying a knife attack. Blocking is stopping a thrush or a slash head on and parrying is moving the blade away from you. It would be ridiculous to attempt this unless you are a properly trained martial arts practioner, even then I would assume there would be chances of getting badly cut. Best is to avoid such situations and run like the wind if you get into one. Stopping or Parrying a large machete like an Auraval with a folder is inviting risk of serious injury, only a demented dodo will attempt this Just imagine what an aurval can do to a hard coconut and what will happen if it meets flesh and bone.

But you can always check with guys like Subal or Slinghsot who are both avid martial artists.

If you aren't trained and very proficient in hand to hand combat please do not delude yourself that you will be able to defend yourself with a knife - large or small.

There are a few large and thick bladed folders, some Extrema Ratios for example, but that isn't going to help you any.

Hi Praveen and welcome to the forum!

As has been mentioned, folding knives are very much romanticized when it comes to being defensive or offensive weapons and will get a person into trouble, either from the authorities or from the mind set that a knife can help you.

The best approach IMHO is to use your feet freely and just get away! If you are being chased keep running, either until the person carrying the machete gets tired or you can find a board or section of pipe larger than the machete. There is no dishonor in shying away from a fight, but unfortunately you do not understand that until you get older.

praveen...if its an impromptu attack, the aruval is going to be about 14 to 18 inches in length.if its a planned attack, the aruval will atleast be 24~30 inches long.
in such a case, you are better off being unarmed, since you would be slightly lower in confidence (going by what you said in your post) and take the most prudent course of action - "deer karate"

Well, there is always Vikram's Claymore.
That should be able to parry an Aruval.

guys as i mentioned im most probably never going to be in a situation like that ever but u know accidents are always unexpected i just wanted to know are there any such blades , now i have another thought what kind of a blade will be best to parry an attack

That should be able to parry an Aruval.

An Aruval? At least a dozen of them. All I need to do is swing a circle with the Claymore.

Unless you are an expert trained in the knife arts, don't even attempt to parry a Machete type weapon with a pocket knife. You will probably lose your hand.
The best defense for an ordinary guy, if you don't have an equivalent weapon, is to turn and run.

On a lighter note; wear tennis shoes and you will be able to outrun the average goonda in his chappals. Remember, you just have to be faster than your friends.
