If one has a dealer friend, and you find the firearm in a different state and have no all India lisence,is it possible for the dealer to make the buying and selling to you?Just a thought.

Grumpy, you can see the pic of the bolt on the first post. Is the pitting you see there cause for concern or should one avoid any rifle that has pitting on the bolt, however slight it may be?

Dodger, in the photograph the `pitting` looks like blotchy stains so I can`t comment on how bad/how deep they may be however any damage to a bolt should be regarded as the rifle having its safe operation compromised. You`ld be prepared to put your eye behind a damaged bolt when firing a 30-06 cartridge with multiple tons of pressure ? There`s no way that I would.

This being India, sometimes one only has two choices - stop shooting or take a risk and to a large extent the Government of India is responsible for this.

You may not want to answer my next question, at least publicly, for very obvious reasons but how deep does the pitting need to be for the bolt to become unsafe?

The Government of India isn`t responsible for downright stupidity. I would not consider firing a rifle with a damaged bolt in any circumstances. I`ve seen what happens when a bolt fails and the risk is literally of death or - at least - losing an eye.
There are plenty of things that I will compromise with.....there are some that I will take risks with. Using a rifle with a damaged bolt is not one of them. Rust and bolts are totally incompatible.
I regularly shoot old guns - guns up to around 130 years old. I sometimes shoot guns that are sound but pretty worn. Rusty junk I pass on to a guy who cleans them up and sells them as wallhangers.

There's a second hand Zastava Mauser sporter in 30-06 with a 4x Burris scope on it on sale at my club for $ 350. I am sure the owner would sell it for $ 300 if someone amde him an offer. The difference between prices here and India are more than just ridiculous. As Asif rightly says, one can only read and weep...

We need to fight this state of affairs.
