Turkeys are suprisingly hard to kill, and you aim for the head.

They can also fly, I've seen them fly 1/2 km or more on occasion. They roost in trees at night too.

You use a call, there are about a half dozen different sounds you can use depending on the situation (another dominant male, a lonely hen, a lost baby which will get all the hens coming over and then then the male follows the women just like us, etc)

Typically where I live, you are only allowed one male so even if you can shoot 2 at once it is not allowed. Also, you only shoot males, they have to have a beard (I'll try to post another pic showing a beard)

And Pran, yes you use duck and goose calls when hunting those animals (though I am not either a duck or goose hunter).

Turkey season starts here next week, I am going to use a 20 guage I think this year, at least for the first half of the season.

The season here runs Monday April 16 to Thursday May 17.

Of interest is you can use shot no larger than #4, this is for safety reason as the mortality of a hunter being hit is much less when #4 and smaller are being used.

You are allowed a maximum of 3 permits, though I only get one for each spring and fall season.

There is both a spring and a fall season, so I guess a person could kill 6 a year.

They have really good eyesight. Once I was about 180 yards away watching one through binoculars, I was sitting at the bottom of a tree on the ground. I put the binoculars in my lap and even though I did it slowly the bird saw the movement and took off.

Read that the turkey shooters use extra-full chokes and the loads are more powerful than the regular game loads.Any info on that?Please.

You haven't lived until you've fired a turkey load! Preferably in a pump. I tell you what, they recoil darn near as hard as anything else under a 416.

And you are also correct the chokes are often extra-full, or even extra-extra full. If you look around the midwayusa.com website it appears there is an entire industry devoted to turkey chokes.

I don't claim to be an expert on turkey hunting, I just go out and shoot my bird, or at least try to

Personally I don't use a decoy, though I see nothing wrong with the practice I'm just cheap.

There are 2 main techniques for turkey hunting, one called "run n gun" and the other is "sit and wait"

The run and gun approach is when the males will gobble in answer to a call, and you pretty much try to set it up so you can sneak up on them. I've had my best luck this way. If they are not being vocal then you have the best luck just sitting in some bushes under a tree and waiting for a curious bird to come up to you. That is where decoys work best.

There are entire books written about turkey hunting tactics, but in a nutshell that is how things go.
