Re: Initiative by Ordnance Factory Board
The only way to improve quality is to introduce competition. Look what happened to fiat, ambassador, gazelle etc when maruti and foreign collaboration arrived in the auto scene in India. As long as IOF have the monopoly, no matter what kind of technology and plant and machinery they import, there will never be any improvement in quality.dr.jayakumar wrote:very very good initiative.i only hope they take this seriously and proceed to a better future.

Well I do agree with you that competition improves quality but I would beg to differ in this scenario. When there is a technical collaboration, its the foreign company as well which is on the line. So if IOF doesn't care about the quality, the other company will. And I don't think international companies would be letting their quality slide just because they are doing business in india ? no. Their quality standards remain the same and I wouldn't be surprised if this would be their first clause in the agreement that the quality would be their way if at all everything else is IOF's way.jonahpach wrote:The only way to improve quality is to introduce competition. However, the collaboration might increase the base price of the now cheaper IOF arms in the market. Even if Beretta sign up for it, it would want its share in dollars .

Re: Initiative by Ordnance Factory Board
Bhargav, unfortunately that is not how it seems to work. If you grew up in India in the 70's & 80's - you'd recall that there were several MNC's operating in India (albeit with diluted equity in their Indian operations) and they continued to palm off less than best products in the Indian market (Unilever formerly Hindustan Lever is an example as are P&G, Dunlop, Seimens, etc.), and Indian consumers were happy to lap up those less than best products. While those companies did not enjoy an absolute monopoly (as IOF does), but still they operated in a market distorted by the license permit raj and those market imperfections showed clearly in the products & services on offer here!
Even today, with the Indian market (relatively) open to global competition, we don't always see the MNC's apply the same rigorous quality standards here as they do in other (more mature) markets. But I digress...
Even without ANY foreign collaboration, if the Govt. were to remove the restrictions on Private players producing & retailing Small Arms & Ammunition combined with rational laws regulating civilian gun ownership - you'd very rapidly see quality products come on to the market. The technology that goes into making guns & ammo hasn't changed much in the past 100 years (though the material engineering aspect has certainly seen improvements/ innovations) and it would not take much for a few of our talented engineers to put together a good product. Even if one were to be lazy about making a new design, there are literally 100's of proven gun designs out there with expired patents which can be copied without fear of IPR infringement.
Cheers!

One also mustn't lose sight of the fact that the current arms law will nullify any good effort in this respect. What's the point of all the R&D&Manufacture when the market itself is so regulated.... and 'rationed'.... I mean, come on, say our gun industry comes up with a match up to, say, the Cz83 or something, and then they inflict an 18 month waiting period to the poor unsuspecting customer....with a 25 shots per year quota as an added 'bonus'.

... the IOF 'base price' is already bloated and over the top considering the near-junk they are peddling.Bhargav wrote: However, the collaboration might increase the base price of the now cheaper IOF arms in the market. Even if Beretta sign up for it, it would want its share in dollars .

I personally think, that there would have being some setup already done, this ad is just to legalise the process, they would already be having some big corporate pushing this.

IOF agreed co-production for Sporting Armsand Ammunition NP
I don't know if you are already aware of this. IOF now agreed to joint venture with third party manufacturers for research and production of Non Prohibited and Sporting arms. Proposals are invited from leading and reputed OEMsfor collaboration in the production of state-of-the art Arms and Ammunition (non-prohibited bore). The collaboration model could be Joint Venture, Co-production, Research & Development, Transfer of Technology
etc. to cater for fast expanding Indian Domestic and Overseas markets.
