Advice needed for Arms Licence and Best IOF Gun

Post by issbisht » Fri Sep 21, 2012 8:52 am

Dear all Seniors,

I came across this forum by chance and saw there are so many people who have so much knowledge about ARMS,Guns and Indian Gun Culture and process....

Recently joined this forum and seek expert advice /clarification on Arm Licence and IOF Guns.

1. Once the Licence is obtained, is it compulsory to buy the Gun within a stipulated time period of 3-6 months or so.

2. Apart from All India Licence, are there any licence valid for multiple states in India.

3. Which one of the below IOF guns is best for Self Defence. (Performance, Safety feature,Accuracy)

0.22" Revolver
0.32" Revolver (7.65 mm x 23)
0.32" Revolver (Long Barrel)
0.32" Pistol

Please give your advice to me so that I have clarity.

Regards
S Bisht

1. Yes. If you do not buy the gun within the specified period, your license will cease to exist. Please read Rule 52 of Arms Rules 1962.

2. Yes. First get district or state license, then get its area validity increased to cover other states or all India.

3. Apart from .22 revolver, the .32 revolver or pistol are what people in this country have been compelled to be satisfied with. All these calibers offered by IOF have marginal stopping power. .32 is considered better than .22. Regardless of the gun or its caliber, it is the shot placement that matters. Shot placement becomes even more important with these kind of calibers. The skill of shooting accurately is a perishable skill. To keep your skill up to the mark, you will have to practice shooting regularly.

1. The "purchase period" will be entered on the license at the time of issue. This can vary between a few months to 1 year (or longer) - depending on the whim of the Licensing Authority as this is completely at his/ her discretion. Yes you will need to purchase the firearm and have it entered within the stipulated purchase period. If the purchase period is about to expire (without having purchased a firearm), you may seek an extension of the same, stating reasons as to why you did not purchase it during the stipulated time. For those who have booked a gun from one of the IOFB factories, you may submit your booking receipt along with request for extension stating reason for delay as delivery of booked firearm awaited from IOF etc.

2. Yes. Arms licenses are commonly issued for home state + 2, 3 or even 4 adjoining states. Usually the Licensing Authority will demand proof of land/ business interests etc. in the adjoining states to establish "need for" extension of area of validity.

3. I'd suggest the standard length .32 cal IOF revolver. But that is merely my own opinion, I am sure many others here will opt for the .32 semi-auto and some will even prefer the .22 LR revolver. Ideally, you should try and shoot all of them at the range and draw your own conclusions based on your experience handling them AND your own research (plenty of info on each has been posted on various threads here).

HTH

Cheers!
Abhijeet

P.S.
1. Prior to handling any sort of firearm make sure you learn proper gun safety
2. Prior to shooting at the range, acquaint yourself with proper range etiquette

Abhijeet pls confirm which one you have suggested by saying ".32 cal IOF revolver"

0.32" Revolver (7.65 mm x 23)

I second my friend...you can't go wrong with the IOF .32 revolver......least defect prone and relatively simple and accurate handgun...
I dont dial 911... I dial .357
