kukri & bush knife with micarta handle...completed

Post by marthandan » Tue May 22, 2012 11:59 pm

have started working on my kukri :D
got the blank made from the blacksmith from my native place. its 18" long and about 6 mm thick.
DSC02329.JPG
had a change of mind and the 18" blank became this. 10 ~ 10.5 " long with a 6.5" cutting length. i want to have a knife that will be the most useful while camping, fishing and for other outdoor activities without scaring the living daylights out of other lesser blessed mortals (NKP's).

it will have a full convex grind with SS bolsters and a micarta handle.

the top pic is what i have in mind for the kukri. the handle design is still fluid. might change it later.

Hi Marthandan,
> Great job!
> Waiting to see the pic of the finished Kukri.
> The wood for the handle looks great - suggest that you use some brass rivets to secure the blade & brass rings at the top & bottom of the handle.
> Also give the wooden handle a good polish & finish with a melamine coat.
Cheers

Not much into blades myself, but what you come up with is simply great, marthandan. Fantastic hobby and great skill. Keep it up, bro!

some progress after a long time. the blade has been heat treated. gave it a basic edge (150 grit wet 'n' dry. i would take the edge upto 1200). it chops well. no visible damage to the edge.

i have tried something different with the kukri. can you guys spot it?

the spine thickness in the first length of the blade close to the handle is about 2mm thinner than the main section of the blade(the part that's used for chopping). thought it might aid in slicing.

It's coming out very nicely and I like your modification.

Has it been differentially heat treated?

Unable to tell from the pics but is it a full convex or are there blade flats?

Will you be making your own micarta? If so, what's the composition?

heat treatment:
heat to non-magnetic, quench in oil.
baked in mom's oven at 250*C for a full hour.
then placed blade spine down on a heated chunk of metal to draw out the temper. the edge was dark yellow.

its a convex grind.

micarta will be made out of jute and fibre glass resin
