The F4F Wildcat got trounced pretty good, it was the F6F Hellcat that was the first fighter that could turn with the Zero, in addition to being armored which the Zero was not.Skyman wrote:The americans were quick to realize the advantage of a .50 cal against unarmored zero's.Three four hits and he was down. The Brits used .30 cal rounds well into the war. After which .50 cals and 20mm rockets made an entry.
The wildcat was the death blow to the zero.
But what i say supplements what you have said.
However, I don't want to hijack so that is a discussion better left for a separate thread sometime.

Thank you mark, i mixed wildcat with hellcat i think. An error on my part. But i do believe even though they were slower, they could endure more hits when compared to the zero? They were armed batter as well.
Is that you in the picture?

Yes that is me. And you are correct, pretty much all of the american planes were much better armored than Japanese, also true in regards to self-sealing fuel tanks. This lack of armor and the accompanying weight was one reason the Japanese planes were such tremendous dogfighters until the Americans developed differnt strategies other than trying to turn with them.
Anyway, back to battle rifles....
An issue with the AK/SKS guns is the lack of accuracy and power at distances over, say 150 yards. If there is a theater of engagement that lends itself to longer distances (such as the Middle East as opposed to the jungles of Vietnam) then a 308/7.62 NATO round will provide better care of its owner IMHO. In regards to what is shooting it- M14, FAL, G3, AR10, etc I think most are pretty similar in terms of reliability and accuracy.

The AK-47 is not a Battle Rifle... The are termed Assault Rifle as they use intermediate cartridges i.e the 7.62 X 39mm and not the 7.62mm NATO roundsknifejunkie wrote:AK - Freakin......47 ,no questions asked

Wow Mark, are you an airman? What plane is that..? Looks like an old plane from the cockpit.
Are you sure the Ak loses Power? Accuracy surely, but power?
Thanks

Nice picture Mark...
My vote goes to the FN FAL and its various avatars in 7.62.
And, 5.56 is just not enough for all battle scenarios. After Kargil several units of the Indian army rifled reports to this effect to the policy makers.

PS: But everything said no rifle is as battle proof as the AK 47. Drag it through mud and sludge, bathe it, throw it around on rocks and it still fires without cleaning.
