Re: Is long search for Mauser 30/06 worth it ?
Hi Friends,
Your spontaneous advices have prompted me to "go for it". A touch of Flu notwithstanding (hence the delay in replying) I was able to close the deal, thank God.
I am uploading pictures that I have taken the moment the rifle entered my house. Thank you Vikram for detailing how I could upload the photos.
Dear Mack The Knife -- please tell me something about this magnificent weapon. A little disappointingly, I could not find 'Mauser' or 'Waffenfabrik Mauser'name inscribed on the barrel. Behind the rear-sight, just below the front-mount of the scope, "635' is inscribed on the barrel. Sideways, behind the foresight I find"30/06" inscribed. Then on the bulge of the barrel support, adjacent to the rear sight I find a trio of tiny markings ;; two of which are decipherable as "pb" and arrow mark.
The seller's license showed that it was a 'Mauser magazine rifle No 635' an that is how it has been entered now in mine.
I believe an European brought it in , in 1970. It lay in Customs for 3 years as he had not acquired an import license or other document. By the time it was cleared, he ha converted to Hinduism and become a vegetarian (complete with South Indian wife). The rifle has hardly been fired 50 times. There was 'Norma' ammo as well as 'Sellier Bellot' with it.
The scope is 6 X 42 HENZOLDT WESLAR and is easily detachable. Even when mounted, you can see below the scope like a "peep sight" and use the normal 'iron sights'. The 'V' is very narrow and that suits me. There is a platinum point to the rear of the foresight -- it gleams at night, like a bead,as you aim -- easily helping you line up with the rear sight - even if you just light a match behind the shooter's head !
The twin triggers are a delight to try out. What a sniper's rifle this could be !! I am only sorry that I am now 70 years old...and shooting is banned. What a fantastic asset it would have been if I had it in my possession in 1970 ! But I am not complaining !

absinroy,
Congratulations on buying the rifle at a reasonable price (by Indian standards) in a desirable calibre. The fact that there is a scope mounted on the rifle makes it all the better. You will find shooting it a lot easier with your 70 year old eyes, than if it had been with out one.The scope itself is/was a good one.Should be clear even now.Claw mounts are not cheap to buy and certainly not cheap to get fitted.
Just a suggestion, resist the temptation to fire the old ammo in the rifle.Get fresh ammo.

Congratulations, sir.
That is a beautiful rifle.
That is a beautiful rifle.

Oh my god.....you sir,are a very fortunate man. That mauser looks like it was made yesterday.
I would rather hit my target gently than miss hard.

absinroy: You won't find any "Mauser" markings on this rifle, because it is not an Oberndorf "Original" Mauser, but a very nice custom rifle built on a commercial FN action long after WW2. Congratulations! Treasure it, even if you can not put it to its proper use!

Hi I agree with everyone that is one beautiful rifle I have fired one and the double trigger is fantastic to use .. even without a scope you get very accurate groups. Goodluck again. We have a saying in the fishing enthusiasts for good luck we say TIGHT LINES. for shooting I think we should adopt TIGHT GROUPS as good luck. So for you with your mauser TIGHT GROUPS
