Planters Shikar Tales

To understand animal behaviour,a lot of my work involves research on writings and clips about Shikar.

Many a times you come across pieces written by people, specially planters who captivate you with their simplicity of writing and by way of narration.

Two such interesting stories on Shikar are TIGER ON FOOT by Gerry Halnan and the THE BORSAKOLI TUSKER by Dick Scott.

Lovely stories from a planter's diary. Thanks for sharing NE.
I have this friend who works for a famous Tea Co. in Assam.

He once had a sick leopard cub abandoned by it's mother not far from his "bangla". The mother had carried away the healthier cub/cubs and abandoned this one as she thought he had little hope of survival.

So our man brought him home and nursed him day in and day out. Took him to the local vet for i.v. and antibiotics twice a day (inspite of his hectic schedule as a manager).
Finally the cub made it and was in perfect health.
After a couple of weeks the forest guys "raided" his place and told him that he had broken the law by keeping a wild animal in captivity.
He quietly handed over the cub.
When they were leaving he asked them to take the feeding bottle he had been using for the little creature.
"How can you give an empty bottle. Top it up with milk and give it."Commanded the DFO.

Some people are just thankless.

He could never follow up on the cub and what happened of it later. But he still cherishes the memories and the photographs he has of the two weeks he spend with "little spots".

My concern is that leopards could be next cats to disappear ...by the way you are next to FRI ( Forest Res Institute) in D Dun dont ask them if they have Standard process how to deal with such litter or cubs? They truly cant release them in wild DFO sounded pretty ignorant. Other thing is what is difference between Indian Forest service chaps and local state folks? At one time IFS was very sought after post not sure whether any one would like to stay in backwaters these days with family child education etc ( sorry went of on the tangent)
