Is long search for Mauser 30/06 worth it ?

Post by absinroy » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:39 pm

Friends -- for many years now I have been searching for a Mauser 30/06 rifle with twin triggers and mounted scope. I have at last made contact with someone in Mumbai who has this rifle in pristine condition, with 6 x 42 scope factory mount.. with plenty of ammo too. Problem is that my joy at finding the weapon was somewhat short-lived as he is asking Rs 4 lacs for it . Is this a fair price ? I would like to have some advice very quickly please. Being relatively new to this forum, can somebody also kindly advise me how to upload photos that I took on-the-spot ? Many thanks

Hello Absinroy,

The price is not excessive considering the rates being quoted for imported .30-06 rifles in India nowadays, especially considering that it in pristine condition and comes with a 'scope. Go for it if you like it.

All the best.

Is this a fair price ?
It does depend on what you want it for. \
If you're paper punching, will it shoot four times better than a IOF 30-06 for less than a quarter of the price? That is highly unlikely.

Since you can't use it for hunting; does its legendary reliability, controlled feed and positive ejection of its massive claw extractor mean that much? Maybe not.

On the other hand if you have always dreamed of owning a classic Mauser sporting arm with a set trigger, then by all means go for it (if you can afford it).

Only you can decide if it is worth it.

It is something you want, is it something you can afford? If yes, then I would say by all means do it.

These sort of things one always regrets if you pass on the opportunity.

Another thing to consider is that in another 20 years this gun will be worth quite a bit more than this price, and an IOF will not.

Hi I put up my remington 30.06 model 700 and was going for a. 22 lr.members bought me to my senses.the dealer was willing to pay me over 525000.I wanted 550000 and would have got it he was that eager to buy it. A friend has a mauser with the twin triggers shoots superbly.I think 400000 is worth it but mind you my remington is in pristine condition with a jeweled bolt. Cheers

A lot of members keep suggesting the IOF rifles instead of the imported brands. Just want to point out the tea gets sweeter the more sugar you put in it. The iof weapons will always keep losing value while the imported weapons are like investments also. You can't compare companies that have been making weapons for years with a company that does not even make 4 or 5 calibres

If it is an Original Oberndorf Mauser sporting rifle and not a converted military M98. Then 4 lakhs is a fair price by international standards. The original scope mounts, scope (hopefully a period Zeiss or similar) and ammo makes the deal very sweet. I'd say you would be stealing it at that price.

Buying a particular weapon is an individual choice. Not all people would accept the argument that the worth of certain weapons will appreciate over time.

As concerns the IOF, despite people cussing it to the end of the earth, they shoot and that too fairly OK. All said and done, they are affordable and practical. Also, making a few calibres does not make a manufacturer a bad one.

I agree that sporting firearms must have a certain finish, marketability and even elan; at least (IOF) they are available in today's regressive licensing era.

My friend Mack The Knife I thought you had renounced your passion for guns. Seems you could not resist the lure of some good Kruppstahl after all.

Hi when I mentioned they make a few calibers it does matter.every caliber fires and behaves differantly so they have too have world class research facilities and knowledge about metalurgy, and testing facilities. Don't want to trash iof but you cannot compare them to some international companies.

abs

As Mack The Knife pointed out if its like his rifle go for it because good 3006 rifles are at a premium e.g. Winchester ADL is being quoted at Rs 10 lakhs plus and BDL at Rs 15 lalks in delhi so this is cheap comparatively. Also I heard for some reason Mausers are commanding lower prices in Punjab region - again all this is heresay. Either way post the pictures here so members could assist there is lot of junk out there - agree with other member go for IOF 3006 and then have it done up by a competent ( legal) gun smith. Why break a bank over a phoren gun but then every one to their own?
But it may also be a good investment at the way gun prices are you could diversify some of your stock money into such collectibles !

Yes, if its an Mauser M98 sporter.....you should go for it, as Mack The Knife pointed out. I wouldent say avoid the military conversions, but they do not have the charm the sporters have especially the express sights on sporters compared to the tangentry ones. I am not sure if all the sporters came with express sights, the one i have has these sights and every time i look at it i appreciate it some more "good job Paul Mauser" :D
And if it has a set trigger boss you should go for it...it is a decent price.

cheers

Buy it ,to me the mounts , scope and ammo seem like cherries on top of an already sweet deal.... Alternatively the IOF 30-06 is a good n accurate rifle outa the box and sets ur pockets lighter by only 85 big ones....
I dont dial 911... I dial .357
