Please suggest some flashlights

Post by abhiram » Sun Aug 19, 2012 10:26 am

Hi All,

I am currently doing a research and scouting forums to buy a high end flashlight as a gift to my dad. The rough specs I am looking for are:

1> Batteries: AA/AAA Ni-MH or Alkaline batteries. The number of batteries should be 3 at max.
2> Light Source: LED
3> Output modes: At least 2 output modes [High, Low]. A medium mode is highly appreciated.
4> Beam: Need a good flood and throw. A warm light is preferred, but not a deal breaker.
5> User Interface: Side switch, both for on/off and changing modes. Tail cap switch is not preferred.
6> Budget: Up to USD 115. This is including shipment and duties.

My dad has been using a rechargeable Britelite, which fails sometimes now. He is very comfortable with the side switch interface and hence I am looking for something similar.

I have tried Fenix LD12 [tailcap on/off] and Zebralight SC51w and from forums I have read reviews of Olight S35 which looks like a contender.

I am looking forward for valuable suggestions from the flashlight experts here.

Regards,

Abhi

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but the TK Series lights either use CR123A, D type batteries or a large number of AA batteries [8 of them!!].

There aren't many quality lights with side switch... You have already looked at zebra, that's the best in its class for side switches.

If you relax this req, maybe I can suggest one or two...

Hi,

What would be those parameters which needs be relaxed? Budget could be upped a bit in case I find a good model.
I am afraid I can't relax on the side switch parameter as my dad who is gonna use this light does not prefer tail cap switch.

The Fenix LDd 12 which you have already tried is a good option. Otherwise go for the LD 22.

Not crazy about Olight or Zebralight.

Hi Rajat,

Thanks for your suggestion, but the issue I found with LD12 is that after turning on the light using the tailcap, I need to change the grip or use both hands for adjusting the brightness levels. Otherwise it is a very good light.

The Fenix TK series lights came really close to my specs, but they use 8 AA batteries!!

If your dad is worried about tail switches because it is difficult to operate, then look at quark AA tactical - the protruding tailcap switch is fantastic.

Another option is the Photon Pro AA light. Has a red led as well to preserve night vision.

Excellent Rajat.. This is exactly what I was looking for!! I'll keep an eye for this model release.

Meanwhile, I am planning to buy another Zebralight as an interim solution.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions,

Hi,

I just came across Nitecore EA1 and EA2 models. Does anyone here have any experience with Nitecore lights?
