Sharpening Tantos- Help needed.

Post by Skyman » Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:49 pm

Hey Guys,

Tried my hand at sharpening my boker with a device i got off DX, one of those mini sharpener things, they have a small stone in the middle and guards at the end, like a sandwich, you just drag the blade through.

My first attempt, lost some paint off the blade. However, in a tanto there are two parts, one the part at 0 degrees, the other inclined at 45 or so.I sharpened the two parts individually but how do i sharpen that end curve? that part where the edge stats to climb upwards? The meeting point between the 0 and 45 degrees?
I would rather hit my target gently than miss hard.

You have to do that part by hand with a small sharpening stone.

If your sharpener has 2 rods that come together in a V, you can rub that corner one side at a time against a rod but do it at the top of the V and not down at the bottom.

It's a very low quality stone bout an inch in diameter, help between two plastic guides. The part where the edge starts up has to be sudden. It shouldn't get rounded, or that'll ruin the knife. How do i do that?

Now you know why tanto blade shape is not very common and preferred. :-)

Patience grasshopper. That's all you need - slow and very deliberate strokes as you reach that junction.

You know that edge has to be like a hill, rising edges on both sides but that part needs to be kind of triangular and raised.Like a nose.

If i sharpen, it'll literally be nose to the grindstone!!!
