Bug out Bag(New)
A bug-out bag[1][2] is a portable kit that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours[3][4] when evacuating from a disaster. It is also known as a 72-hour kit,[5] a grab bag,[6] a battle box, and other popular names include "Personal Emergency Relocation Kits" (PERKs) GO Bag and GOOD (Get Out Of Dodge)[7] bag. The focus is on evacuation, rather than long-term survival, distinguishing the bug-out bag from a survival kit, a boating or aviation emergency kit, or a fixed-site disaster supplies kit. The kits are also popular in the survivalism subculture.[8]
The term "bug-out bag" is related to, and possibly derived from, the "bail-out bag" emergency kit many military aviators carry. The concept passed into wide usage among other military and law enforcement personnel, though the "bail-out bag" is as likely to include emergency gear for going into an emergency situation as for escaping an emergency.[9]
How many of you actually have a bug out bag???
i have 1

Sorry guys i was busy with my exams couldn't reply
i'm so happy i never expected to get such huge response Thanks
I read as many posts as possible
I just see ppl telling i have this i have that i have BOB for more than a week to survive some ppl telling that they have secret hideout and a secret path mapped out for hideout all sort of stuff.
But how many of you actually thought of the capacity of your body you may have BOB prepard to go out for war with food, arms, ammunitions, tents, gas masks, axe, hammer, knife, machete all sort of stuff. But are you physically capable of carrying 25-30kg load around. I regularly jog for 5 Kms everyday just running with nothing on me i feel exhausted my BOB is 10kgs I've tried to run with it i can cover a maximum of 2kms then i get winded i need another 10min to regain my strength. With a mere load of 10 kgs i find it difficult in case of any natural disaster or war scenarios how will you be able to carry all those stuff if your transport breaks down you may have to run, climb walls and stairs you will be in such a state of mind you just drop extra load and run for cover in that extra load you may have the most critical items for survival.
So i say plan every move keep multipurpose tools carry enough food for 72hrs and hunting gear they are enough to provide food for months a hammock is better and more safe than a tent basic knowledge about reading maps and compass is better than carrying expensive GPS
"Keep it simple "
I also read about firearms all kinds from assault rifles to sub-machine guns to pistols and shotguns well firearms are essential tools but all the advanced kind of arms you carry once run out of ammo is useless you need to select a weapon which is not only light and multipurpose but also the most widely used cuz when you run out of ammo you can find it every where from depots to deserted vehicles both public and military .
I prefer
Ak series in the eastern hemisphere
M16's and AR15's in the norther hemisphere
Well in India since firearms are banned i prefer machete in case if you find any .303 never use it most of the ammo are expired(True fact: Mumbai 26/11) and worst case scenario it may blow up in your face .
Every one has their own specs for a BOB how much every you try there will be some situations you would have not prepared for .
My idea of BOB is simple put yourself in that situation just imagine you are in a cave in the tropics what do u need First rule of BOB u need water and from a clean source if not clean you need a filter of some kind a simple piece of cloth , few fragments of charcoal a straw(any hollow plant) thats all for a filter you dont have to put a expensive filter a water purifier in your bag all these thing are all around you . Some food carrying food for 72hrs ok you need more just carry some twine thread you can lay hundreds of trap with it if you have some kind of elastic tube you can make a spearfishing gun you dont have to carry a hunting gear just like that think put yourself in that situation and design the bag based on it.
Having Expensive BOB does not mean you can survive all situations. We are all equipped with BOB's guessing where it is it is in that small piece of meat in your skull called "BRAIN". Just develop it read true real life stories of disaster survivors learn few trick about setting traps just access that library we all have .

A very interesting topic. I hope members do participate in this discussion.
Shashank, thanks for sharing all this information about Bug out Bags. However it would have been better if you would have given us all these details in your own words and based on your understanding of it OR you should have given a link of the source from where you borrowed all this. In this case it seem to be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug-out_bag. However the same details are available on a number of other websites too.

Re: Bug out Bag
Folks,
This is what I have:
1. Multitools: SAK, Chinese Leatherman-type tool (to be replaced by the original as and when Goddess Lakshmi smiles )
2. Fire-starter - just for the heck of it , 5 types: Zippo in pocket, disposable lighter with the jet-type flame, DIY waterproofed matches, flint-and-steel, magnifying glass. Plus wood shavings (from pencil sharpening - my kid produces a few tons every month!!) and petroleum jelly mix, cotton balls, spare can of Zippo fluid for building up the fire.
3. Duct Tape: about 20 feet of 3M's silver coloured tape wrapped around a pencil stub.
4. Medical kit: standard first aid kit purchased from St. John's Ambulance. Quite exhaustive, if a bit heavy to carry. Can be obtained online. I got mine from ebay.in
5. Paracord: Slightly less than 100 feet. I bought 2*100 feet from Singapore (couldn't find it here, was walking opposite a camping shop there, saw a roll, bought two! Of all the funny things to buy on phoren trips!!!)
6. Bandanna: woodland camo, purchased from Oliveplanet.in
7. Shemagh: ..... ditto........
8. Cap / beanie
9. Emergency poncho: same as bandanna & shemagh
10. Small monocular: from a "grey market" in Kolkata. Pretty good - 20X!
11. Flashlights: I carry 1 (tiny) on my keychain, 1 in the glove compartment, 1 in the bug out bag. Cree lights through ebay.com
12. Whistle: gifted by my son on my birthday
13. A hip flask full of some decent Scottish stuff
14. Small spray can of WD 40 (dunno why, just wanted to).
15. Self defence: Cold Steel sjambok, Com-Tech stinger on keychain, 4-5 cans of pepper spray shared between wife, car doors, bug out bag. I am split on the issue of carrying my 8.5" Nieto. If it gets seen by cops in Mumbai, I'll be sharing a cell with Kasab!! Firearms will be obtained as & when (still working up my willpower to apply for a license )
16. Iodine tablets for water purification.
17. 5-6 folding plastic water bottles with Angry Birds and other cartoons on them, to hold about 5 litres, purchased for return gifts for kiddo's birthday. Western websites recommend Platypus, however, my dollar is 1/52 of theirs . Probably the hot water bags sold in pharma shops can work equally well.
18. Keep 3 trekking poles in car boot, anyway. Can be used as supports, splints, carry things like Charlie Chaplin, even as weapons or to prop up shelters.
19. Compass and guide book / map of Mumbai and surroundings. Mobile has pretty decent GPS.
20. 200 gm of Glucon-D powder.
Need to add:
1. Solar mobile charger
2. Radio - not very clear as to the availability, permitted range for civvies, price, etc.
3. Cigarette paper / pipe + loose tobacco (very very necessary for me, will not be applicable for all). Normal ciggies are prone to damp, and you can't really store a carton or so!
4. Most important ingredient - TRAINING!! I am looking for training in compass & navigation, first aid (have some basic stuff there). I do have apps for US Army Survival manual, Red Cross first aid manual, knot tying, etc. on my phone, but then..........
FOOD: for 5 people and a dog, keeping food in one bag all the time would be very cumbersome. Hence I ensure that the home has enough biscuits, granolas, dry fruits, etc, which we can grab and go, fast.

Re: Bug out Bag
I think you ought to have the food IN the bag as you may have time enough to grab a single bag and run. Think a quake. Good idea to put snacks and replenish them as their expiry comes near.essdee1972 wrote:Folks,

A buddy, who is also a survival expert, had prepared a list. I will upload the PDF with his permission and give the link here in a day or two (presently away for business).

Re: Bug out Bag
I have had one for a while now, but some of the items that I would like to have in it are either very hard to get here or are impractical to have a replacement supply. I have a :
1. handguns(s) & ammo, the rifle and ammo will have to be carried separately
2.flashlights
3.compass & gps
4.survival type knife & swiss army knife
5. Multi tools
6. Matches & lighter
7.Transceiver for listening to radio broadcasts and emergency communication
8.Water bottles but carried separately
9. I want MREs but don't have a source in India, so would have to pack dry fruits/nuts, candy/energy bars, biscuits
10. Medical supplies such as band aid, pain killer, anti inflammatory pills, anti histamine, anti diarrhoea pills etc.
The biggest problem in bugging out for me is that I have family members whose ages range from 2 years to 87 years so it is not a realistic option for me. Bugging -in is probably more practical as well as allows me a lot more flexibility in my supply chain and logistics requirements.
Still no harm in being prepared. The down side is that even if I were to have my Bug out bag with me in the car trunk, with all the police checks and security checks at hotels and malls, and other public places, it would appear that I am the one trying to lay a seige and up to some mischief .
Regards,
Anand

Re: Bug out Bag
Hello friends,
I live in southern california, right halfway from los angeles and inland empire, the reason to pick this location was because this is half way from my work place and my girlfriends work place. The first priority for us is a get home in case of any manageable emergency.
My get home bag/truck bag consists of basic stuff: (both of us carry 36 bottle boxed water in our vehicles)
First aid kit
Flash Light
Back up call phone battery
Bandana (doubles as a tourniquet)
Local Map
Paracord
additional set of clothes
socks
one pocket knife
I am brown guy in US and will never want to open carry or conceal carry a firearm
(I drive a 4X4 Nissan Xterra, I know the home back through surface streets and dirt trails bypassing all freeways)
My girlfriends get home bag
back up cell phone battery
Flares
flash lights
Emergency lights
Power bar candies
MRE's
40 rounds of 9mm HP
Smith and Wesson Sigma 9mm in the car (ccw permit holder, she's asian american, but still doesn't want it on her person)
Pocket Knives
Emergency Medical kit
She will be at the most risk as she drives a coupe, and can barely go off road, but we still have a map in the car showing alternative surface roads to home.
Once we get home, under any duress, we plan to accommodate another couple who is also my best buddy.
We have enough stored supplies food, MRE's and especially water for one month. Me and my Gf are good marksman and have enough Ammo to fend for ourselves. My friend also knows to use a firearm.
Worst Situation, is bug out.
When?
When there is no relief to whatever kind of emergency looms and supplies can only last of 3 days.
Where?
Back to my work place, which is well out of city, well protected, kinda discreet, and has one indoor container with two boxes of emergency supplies which will last for another month and half. Water is available and stored in tanks which will last longer but will need elaborate filtering.
Bug Out bag;
200 rounds 7.62 x 39 mm steel core FMJ
AKM Rifle
200 Rounds 9mm FMJ
MRE's/food for two days
portable stove cup
Hydration Bag
sleeping bag
Ponchos
Tyvek suits
face masks
iodine tablets
Water filteration systems
Hunting knive
Packet of sugar
Field Medic kit
mil cleaning kit 30 cal (fits both .308 and 7.62 x 39) brushes for 12G and .22
lighters
small plastic bottle of alcohol

Bug Out bag;

Re: Bug out Bag
My BUG out Bag is basically an urban survival bag. The reason I state urban survival, is that I am willing to sacrifice some stuff and add some stuff that is more relevant in the context of Mumbai rather than the Jungle. As and when I go camping, I add more wilderness survival to the list.
The deal is this....I NEVER take out anything from the Bug Out Bag...EVER. I only add to it if necessary. It is always ready and in case needed, I just pick it up and I am off. My wife has a similar bag and our daughter is being coached on the benefits.
This is my current carry. It is possible that I will evolve this as I learn more.
1. Size : Right now my Bug Out Bag is a Maxpedition Versipack. No other reason other than that it is convenient and the right size. In case I need to take more stuff, I have a 30 liter backpack.
2. Contents :
a. Identification papers : Passport and other identification.
b. Financial Papers : Photocopies of bank account and other papers that I can ill afford to lose. The originals are kept in another location.
c. Map of state
d. Multiple Cell phone chargers and additional cell batteries
e. Duracell Batteries - at least enough to power batteries for 24 hours
f. Flashlight. At least 2.
g. Multitool : Leatherman Surge
h. First aid kit (will give details later on this...but it has most medicines, ointments, crepe bandage, sprays.. that are needed in a city)
i. Fixed blade knife : Esee Izula
j. Compass + Whistle
k. Sunglasses
l. Floppy hat that covers my neck
m. Sunscreen & Chapstick
n. Toothbrush/toothpaste/personal hygiene stuff (some cologne helps )
o. Cash & change - I wont specify how much. But it will have INR as well as USD
p. GPS
q. Matchboxes & at least 2 lighters
r. Chocolate bars. These are the hard dark chocolate and dont melt easily. Best form of energy. I will add dry food provisions in case I need them
s. Chewing Gum
t. Paracord
u. Duct tape
v. Pepper Spray
w. A small can of WD 40
x. Water bottle. Folding bottles.
y. At least 2 plastic bags
z. Needles & thread
Cheers,
Slingshot
