Renjith, if you go through the arms act 1959 and arms rules 1962 you will get your answer.
The link is on this website too and in the mha website also.
Hope this helps.

last month i applied a license for shotgun in the category of sports. Today i had my police verification for my arms a license. The writer of the police station along with another policeman came to my house. He asked me why i want a gun now?.I said i am a person who loves shooting and a member of rifle club. Then he replied me it was first time an application for arms license came in front of them for shooting sports  .All the licenses in the station range is for self defense.(22 gun licenses)

They said now government is not giving license for self defense and for crop protection and the 22 licenses are going to be cancelled without allowing a renewal for them by mentioning a recent order from government. :?:

I got a narrow hope for my license as they said that there is no mention in that order for grant / refusal / restriction of license for shooting sports.

I said that section 13 of arms act 1959 states that licensing authority shall grant license for smooth bore gun for sports.I was shocked by the reply from the police man, Arms act 1959 is very old and police is granting or rejecting license by looking the recent orders from the government and they cannot deviate from that".

Am not sure what will happen to my license , now i am in confusion that am i living in a country that judiciary have any importance?? :?:

If they reject your license then go to court. I am not a lawyer but I think the govt cannot go against anything that is written in the constitution.
If the court tells you no then only you should take it as "no".

Good luck

I know this is off topic, but since my story has been told here it's worth a mention..

Had my first day at the Dr. Karni Singh range with a rented .22 peep sight Anschutz, albeit without ammunition.

The arms were shaking, the gun felt heavy, the target blurred too soon and the strength wore out after 20 mins of holding practice. However, after the long arduous journey of more than a year the pleasure of looking through the sights of a rifle made all the trouble seem trivial.

Bhargav,

I remember it to be a 19... series. Could be a 1910 or 1907. Will check again the next time (which should be tomorrow!).

And the best part: Rent Rs. 20 per hour.

It was a pity no ammunition to fire.

AB,

Did I see you gng out in a black safari? or is it just my misplaced overestimation of my photographic memory? I was driving in at the gate when i saw u (or a bearded look alike!) driving out. It was an overdose of calories in the sweet pudding. Will see you around soon, would love to. As Churchill said, I fight for my corner. We did too.And hopefully will keep our corner till the pub closes.

Oh man SS I envy you. Rs. 20/hour rent  seriously ?

I am digging some smallbore shooting here in the US and most of the shooters shoot Anschutz model 64. I guess they don't make them new anymore but the old versions are still available in the second hand market but boy they are expensive. A good bore Ans 64 costs around $1300 used :)

A new Ans 19 series is around $3K-4K :(

but then you don't have ammo so we are in the same boat :) hehe.. just kidding

Bhargav, I guess we're a country of hidden costs. I've spent more on fuel going back and forth to licensing authority and my lawyers office than I would have on purchase of a brand new rifle! If you are in Delhi next time I shall attempt to give you the cheap thrill (no pun intended) of Rs. 20 per hour rented rifle. Mind you, no commitments that you will actually get to fire live ammunition! :?

AB, read about your addition rejection. Very disappointed. Good luck and nail those idiots- yet again.

So even I have to pay the rent if I don't shoot the live ammo? :)
