(un)focussed scopes

hi all!

recently, i tried using a nikko stirling gold 3-9X40 on my air rifle. however, i discovered that the image became blurred/unfocussed when i changed magnification. i tried looking at varied distances, to no avail.only twisting the zoom control to around 4-5x gave me a clear pic.

i have a hawke 3-9x40 which gives me a clean pic at all levels and magnifications, so i'm probably not going blind . i tried looking all over the nikko for a focussing knob, and found none(but neither has the hawke).

is it how nature intended it to be? have i found myself a crap scope? or is there something stupid i'm missing. could do with some advice.

p.s.i wear glasses, which i do not take off when shooting.

That has probably been set for 100 metres/yards.

At what range/s were you trying to aim?

Very busy at the moment but I think there is something wrong with your scope.

was trying to aim at 20m. it was/is advertised as airgun rated. hence my interest in it(or folly?) .

They may claim it's airgun rated but they may have forgotten to reparallax them for airgun ranges.

This isn't too hard to do and I could give you a pictorial de.scription of how to do it but if the tool slips you could end up scratching the objective lens. Interested? Failing which, return it to the shop and ask them to check and send you another.

i picked this scope second (perhaps third, who knows?)hand for a cut price at an auction. i'm sort of, stuck with it, and it didn't really burn a hole in my wallet. so i'm game for any experiments .

if i leave things as it is, i have either the option of adding a dead weight on my rifle which gives me the same image as my simmons 4X32, without any of the advantages of the latter.....or try and make a man of this.

so , go ahead and teach, o master. don't worry, i won't blame you for the scratches.

p.s. i might add, it ONLY focusses at 4-5x. at any heavier mags, it blurs all images, near and far!

Does this scope have an AO ring in the front. Set the scope to medium power and then try to focus it in good light. DO not fiddle too much with the eve piece glass ( if there ). Focus with the focussing ring.

NIKKO Stirling Gold will probably be AO.

If mounted on AIr gun set it at 20 meters.
