Re: Protect Leather Sheaths & leather handles
I normally use olive oil on sheaths (nothing too expensive with me right now!), as well as wallets and belts, the latter needing repeated wipes to ensure the trousers / pockets remain pristine!
There is a new waterproofing spray for shoes available in Bata stores. Just bought one, dunno how it will fare in Mumbai monsoons. It makes the leather slightly slick. I still haven't found the guts to use it on leather sheaths, however! The advantage in a spray product is that one can spray the inside of sheaths too, instead of pouring the stuff in and hoping everything is coated.

akayar: Thanks for mentioning the type of lamp to be used.
Essdee: Thanks for the heads-up on the spray. About time Bata introduced it. Hopefully, they will be suitable for materials other than just leather.
Bruno: Excellent find! Thanks.

Not me. Got it off another post. Also remember that the humidity levels in Mumbai are way higher than Bangalore where it's quite dry.

Bruno, many thanks for the link. Mumbai monsoon can play serious spoil sport to all gear. I have to constantly keep watch. And you link is very good. Will check it out asap.
Mack The Knife, thank you for the suggestion for Ballistol. And will definitely check out the Obenauff leather dressing.
Akayar, thanks for the information on the bulb types. Ingenuous solution to vexing problem.
And Essdee, this info deserves a visit to Bata. Which outlet did you visit? Its been a long time since our chance meeting at Crawford Market And this might be a great solution for the insides of leather sheaths as you have observed.

Its a small company but whatever I have used works very well. They have an extensive range I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

Silica crystals in airtight jars are widely used for SLR camera and lenses.works great for long time storage.I heat the gel on a pan to reuse it[ turns blue after absorbing moisture and white on heating] .small silica packets wont work well. Bought me 200gms from a place called 'camera galli' in Mumbai.silica gel evenly spread on bottom of the air tight jar , perforated thermocol sheet over it and the camera atop this.
castor oil has been used since long time by equine keepers for their tacks.
Ghee is used on the leather strings of a tabla to keep them soft.works good as the leather is under constant tension and cracks .
recently been to woodland store and they offered me a leather conditioner kind product around INR 500. no clue how that works.
