The Short 'Buck/Tops' Nighthawk is super. I own the full sized Nighthawk and feel its got the best handle ergonomics compared to any knife I have ever handled. If the knife is not comfortable in your hand it's going to cause you pain and blisters and thats not very pleasant if you are using it for extended periods. The Short blade is much easier to handle and rides well on your waist or in your pack. I myself am not a huge fan of Cold Steel and personally think the owner is a bit demented. But that's my point of view.
My second option would be the LMF II as its a very capable blade.
Carry a Axe if you have a lot of chopping to do. Before that learn to chop with a axe from someone who knows, unlike myself who learned the hard way..

Bruno, Slingshot, Rajat, don't get the CS Bashing The Recon Series of folders are superbly built, will survive an atomic blast, the SRK and the Recon Tanto are superb blade. Understand the advertising turns a lot of people off, but the knives ???

Bullrick, I know for a fact that Slingshot's no fat armchair knife expert An avid outdoorsman using all his blades like the Becker and the SRK and the Esee knives...The SRK's a great blade, easily available, good enough for the Navy Seals during their BUDS training, good enough for most uses....

The Recon Scout's expensive too. At one point was selling at 16k when the SRK was priced at about 6.5k in one of the arms stores....

I usually find that camping is much easier with moderate sized blades. Like a 5 to 7 inch blade. Most wood is available on the ground so no massive chopping necessary. Also food preparation is much easier with the small blades.

True. I agree. And even slightly less than that will do.

While you are at it also look at the newer reasonably priced small Becker knives BK15,16 and 17.

Go for it. Sometimes blades are to be pursued and owned for the sheer joy of it

Well, thanx evryone for your kind opinions....i think i have the final winner and it is BK II.....its built like a tank and its virtually indestructible with a quarter inch blade thichness and the bowie design...!! perfect for trekking and camping trips on weekends and m sure will do serious damage in zombie attack situations as well...!!

Next step is how to procure it...? hmmm....i would personally like to pick it up from a store like an LMF 2 is available....however havent come across any indian store which carries a BKII....Knifecentre has a good price of $75...but i am a little apprehensive on the customs clearence bit as its my first time ordering anything online from abroad. Also reading Kartiksingh's experiences had a question in mind....Y do v need to call them or mail them so many times? evrything including the shipping details etc are mentioned in the website..u just have to pay through ur CC

Bullrick. I jus ordered a ZT 0400st from KC a week back. It went on smooth. Mails has to be exchanged just to confirm whether the knife or the products you are ordering are in stock and whether the shipment has been dispatched and some minor issues. When you order, order only through fedex. Not through USPS. USPS service is pathetic as per fellow members experience. I ordered it through fedex and got it one day prior to the delivery date. Use your International Credit Card to make the payment. If they dont accept your credit card due to some reason (in mine it happend) then go for wire transfer. But wire transfer will cost you additional 30$. Mr. Howard Korn of KC had eliminated my 30$ extra fee as his gratitude as credit card was not accepted. Your bank will charge you 500 rs. for a wire transfer to US. But i think your order will be mostly processed by creditCard. Go ahead and place your order. And pay the customs duty and other charges that fedex incurs, at the time of delivery. You can order without any hesitation any knife whose blade is not more than 9" long and 2" wide. I paid a duty of 28.5% on my knife. And i can assure you the total cost you will incur on ordering a knife from KC wil be lesser to what the dealers in India will charge you. So i guess its a good decision. Better decision will be find someone who will order a knife along with you so that you can share the shipping costs as the shipping costs for multiple knive upto certain weight is same. Mr Kartik Singh had ordered 7Knives at a time and it got delivered swiftly to him. Fedex is the only thing that can bring it to you without much hassle.

Hi Friends

m really embarassed by this situation that i opened the thread with the name of cold steel recon scout, went on to BK2 and finally i have ordered an ESEE 5...!

have ordered the same yesterday, it will be delivered via DHL... dunno y not fedex, and i hve paid the guaranteed customs duty as well in the same transaction. (Dunno, whats best, paying before or after receipt)..

on my final selection of Esee 5, i would say there "no questions asked lifetime warranty" did it for mee....apart from the killer looks. BK2 is also nice, but esee 5 was like an accord and its comparison with BK2 would be with honda city.

Will keep you guys posted, when it arrives as the arrival date is 11th sept.

Now, i need suggestions on one more thing, How to keep it from rusting?

Which affordable, easy to find oil should i use. And any suggestions on the maintenence as this is my first knife.

Congrats bullrick. As for maintenance,
a. Maintain a thin patina of oil on the blade and it won't rust. If you are using it for food, use rub a few drops of food grade oil on its surface, else use machine oil.
b. After every use, rinse it thoroughly with warm water and ensure nothing remains in the blade surface. Fruit acids are dangerous as can eat into the surface finish. Wipe it clean and dry the blade before inserting back into the sheath.
c. Don't worry a lot about rust - if you find any, just take it off with sand paper and coat it with oil as in step a. above.

Moreover enjoy and use it to full extent.

Esee makes good knives. I think you will be pleased with your purchase.

It will not rust easily. There is a very tough protective coating on the blade. Only the sharpened edge might rust and you may oil it with any conveniently available motor / machine oil or coconut oil etc. There are oils and products specifically for this but no need to go for all these.

It does not need much maintenance, just keep it clean and sharp!

any suggestions on the maintenence as this is my first knife.

1. Do not sheath a wet knife.
2.If you touch exposed metal, wipe it down with a dry or oily cloth. You can use any number and type of oils.
3. The edge, non-coated part of the pommel and logos will rust, especially if you are living in an area with high humidity. So keep the edge and logos oiled.
4. Do not let your knife go blunt. You will have to learn knife sharpening. Practice on something cheap first.
5. Do not use metric allen keys to open the handle slab bolts. You may end up rounding off the hex.

People i once had a very bad argument with some one who was advertising for cold steel on youtube.......the tools that they sell are good i mean they have a bang for buck ratio too, it was the misleading advertisement that made me angry...he was chopping some hard wood with that heavy blade then the video was cut and after that he was shaving hair from his leg......thats not possible with any knife, we should remember that knifes are just tools with sharp edges that will get blunt after heavy usage regardless of the kind of tempering of the kind of steel you use, it will get blunt in the end.

That's a good habit if you are using leather sheaths but for safety reasons I do not follow it. However, one needs to ensure that unsheathed knives are stored in a manner, so that they do not bang against each other.
