Post by archer » Fri Jun 22, 2012 11:27 pm

Hi All,
What are the rules to transfer a Dog on TR to India. I am considering if I should get one, I am looking at moving back to India in about 2 years time.
I didnt find anything on the customs website about pets.

Make sure it's up to date on all its shots, heartworm medicine, etc.
I believe the dog will have to be in quarantine for a period of time before it is permitted to enter the country. This could get expensive and would be hard on the dog.

Talk your your nearest Indian High Commission for details

You are lucky. Only dogs are considered pets by Indian authorities and allowed on TR. I discovered this when looking up rules to bring a bearded dragon.

Don't let Naga near your dog. hehe! :)

He believes in solving all problems with a 105mm howitzer. That might not be healthy for the dog.

Hello Archer,

Importing two dogs at a time is not a problem at all. Please go through the contents below -

Customs Circular No. 94/2002 dated 23.12.2002
Import of pets under Baggage – Regarding.

Sir,

I am directed to refer to Board’s instructions issued vide Circular No.9/2002 dated 30th January, 2002 on the above mentioned subject, wherein it was reiterated that bonafide pet animals brought by passengers may be allowed to be brought into the country only against an import sanitary permit issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying or against an import licence issued by the DGFT.

2. In this connection, several references have been received from the passengers, as also the field formations, pointing out the difficulties being faced in implementing the above instructions. The matter has since been re-examined in consultation with the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and it has been decided that the import of pets (dog and cat only) upto two numbers per passenger may be allowed at one time subject to the production of the required health certificate from the country of origin and examination of the said pets by the concerned Quarantine Officer. In such cases, the passengers may not be asked to produce the import licences or import sanitary permits. A copy of standard health protocol to be followed by the passengers while bringing pet animals (dogs and cats) with them is enclosed at Annexure I and II.

3. Necessary instructions may please be issued to all concerned for compliance. Difficulties faced, if any, in implementation of the above instructions may be brought to the notice of the Board.

Kindly acknowledge the receipt.

Yours faithfully,

(D.S. Garbyal)

Thank you all for your help. With my graduation seeming close ( another couple of years) I am planning my return with all the potential things I could get back on a TR. I will keep you posted on developments at my end.
Thanks

Before bringing it on TR you have to owe it for a year and you should have the purchase receipts documented in your name. Plus you should prove that you are the legal owner of it in the US and you are allowed to own it legally in the US.

When you transport it you have to make sure it is unloaded... oh wait this is not about a gun right .. ohh nevermind :)
