Re: information about walkie talkie
Absolutely legal!
These are used by guides in forest parks to trace animals, private security companies..
But If it's for camping, then why not try sat phones? They have other functions like GPS too.
Chinese walkie talkie would cost around 3k.
There are cheaper ones available in toy stores, or homeshop18.com
Sat phone, no idea

Re: information about walkie talkie
As far as I know (and I could be wrong) one needs to get a licence for using and operation a Wireless unit.
I rent them out from one vendor in Lajpat nagar for our events and he always gives me a copy of his licence with the sets.
As far as the range goes , it totally depends on what kind of handsets you are using . Starting from a mere 100mts they can catch up to almost 2kms (straight line of sight & without any obstructions like mountains and buildings) .
The Chinese ones also work , but they tent to pick up other frequency a lot and you will get a lot of unnecessary chatter and also their range is not very much . please don’t get fooled by the range that’s mentioned on the packing .
Also for sat phones you need to get a licence . you can use them but incase you are ever caught then there can be complications. good brands are thuriya and costs between 35000 - and go up till 60000. the call charges are on the higher side.
Hope this was helpfull .
Good Luck !!

Walkie talkies are freely available in the market as well as on ebay etc.

Re: information about walkie talkie
Keep in mind that generally walkie-talkie units are limited by their output power. In the US it is 5 watts (not sure about India). I also don't know if there are specific frequencies set aside for their use, like in the US. The range is dependent on the terrain. You will be able to achieve maximum ranges if the units are in the line of sight of each other. If you have obstructions (terrain, tall buildings) in between the units, your range will decrease.
I have had good luck with the Cobra brand. Motorola does make walkie-talkies for civilian use and they work pretty well too.

Hi,
If its a fixed frequency buddy set, shouldnt be a problem.
On any vhf set, where the frequency can be tuned, you need a certificate of proficiency to operate it.Its illegal otherwise.
Check out the website of the ministry and you will find all the details there.
Even ham radio operators in this country need to be licensed.

Re: information about walkie talkie
Aloha,
I have used Motorola walkie talkies when they first came out years ago.
Wife and I used then exclusively when shopping at malls or Wal-Mart. Large places where
she goes her way and I mine. Call to keep in touch and when ready to leave.
They work well. Even from a moving vehicle as long as it is mainly line of sight.
Several years ago, they were availible for rent in the Mall of America for families to keep in touch.
What is availible now: http://www.motorola.com/Business/US-EN/ ... c_ev=click
Since we now have cell phones, the Wife and I no longer use them.
Have not seen them being sold locally in Wal-Mart or other places we usually go to.
I do see them in outdoors catalogs for camping, hunting, fishing or boating.
We have 3 or 4 different set we no longer use.

Re: information about walkie talkie
Amarjit,
I see that my previous post did not have any effect on you.
Read the following:
5. Licences.—The telegraphy authority constituted under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, shall be the authority competent to issue licences to possess wireless telegraphy apparatus under this Act, and may issue licences in such manner, on such conditions and subject to such payments, as may be prescribed.
6. Offence and penalty.—
(1) Whoever possesses any wireless telegraphy apparatus, other than a wireless transmitter, in contravention of the provisions of Section 3 shall be punished, in the case of the first offence, with fine which may extend to one hundred rupees, and, in the case of a second or subsequent offence, with fine which may extend to two hundred and fifty rupees.
(1A) Whoever possesses any wireless transmitter in contravention of the provisions of Section 3 shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees or with both.
(2) For the purposes of this section a Court may presume that a person possesses wireless telegraphy apparatus if such apparatus is under his ostensible charge, or is located in any premises or place over which he has effective control.
(3) If in the trial of an offence under this section the accused is convicted the Court shall decide whether any apparatus in respect of which an offence has been committed should be confiscated, and, if it so decides, may order confiscation accordingly.

The government takes a dim view of you possessing these things if you dont have the license for them.

Re: information about walkie talkie
Bah! British law still in force, I say we stop obeying our constitution and follow the British one.
I'm deeply confused because it says "other than a wireless transmitter".
Can somebody clear my doubt?
