Re: "Geometry" (tanto fighter)
Moin,
A microwave oven cooks food by breaking water molecules in the food by high energy microwaves.
Thats why you dont put metal, they'll reflect waves.
But the oven, or OTG, uses heat to cook food.
So, metal can be kept inside it, to heat it.
Modern microwave oven have a feature of convection cooking. So, you can just heat the walls and heat the air inside it to cook food.

it is avilable in market. .Priyan wrote: Also from where did you get nitric acid?
We use it thrice in a weak in our lad. .
The HNO3 (nitric acid ) which is genearly avilable in market is 6(N) - 8 (N) , add some distil water , then it becomes dialutaed..marthandan wrote:moin...try diluted nitric acid (25 ~ 30% concentration)...it will etch anything

DONT ADD WATER TO ACID!!!!!
Never do that!! You might get burnt!!!
In Labs, we always add acid to water.
And if possible wear an old thick cloth while doing it.

Re: "Geometry" (tanto fighter)
the handle and the scabbard have been made. a dry fit showed a good fit with no clearances. the leather inside the scabbard ensures a snug fit and that the blade doesn't get scratched.
the handle and the scabbard will be dyed burgundy and then finished with with wax or lacquer. plan to do a japanese style cord wrapping. will post the finished knife by thursday.

Re: "Geometry" (tanto fighter)
that's a very important advice. when acid is diluted, a lot of heat is released which causes the liquids to bubble and splatter all around. the correct way to dilute acid is,varunik wrote:DONT ADD WATER TO ACID!!!!!

In Labs, we always add acid to water.
And if possible wear an old thick cloth while doing it.
step 1: calculate the amount of water needed to dilute the acid to the required concentration.
step 2: take the entire quantity of water (use only distilled water. you will get them from pharmacies.) in a beaker. ensure that the water does not fill more than 60 ~ 75% of the container (to prevent splatter).
step 3: add the acid very slowly in small quantities to the water (if possible drop by drop is the best way).
hoipe this helps

That would be light yellow I guess. I'm located in a rural area so gathering required materials is hard for me.marthandan wrote:its an old file...so, could be W1 or W2 or its equivalent. its been termpered at about 150 ~ 200 *C in a baking oven.Priyan wrote:Dear marthandan,
Is it O1 tool steel or leaf spring?
Also from where did you get nitric acid? I'm having a hard time finding it here.
Nice Tanto BTW, what are you planning to draw he temper to? Straw or blue?
there is an area in chennai known as "Parrys" that is full of shops catering to every industry possible. you can get anything there; plastics, glues, tools, steels, non ferrous metals, chemicals etc. i got the nitric acid from a shop selling chemicals.
I managed to locate linseed oil here, now my handles would look beautiful. Also do you preheat the water before quenching W1 tool steel?
When I'll get to shoot a gun?

Re: "Geometry" (tanto fighter)...progress updated
made some progress with the knife. the handle and guard have been made new (handle was too short while the guard became loose after i polished the blade). quite happy with the fit. still need to polish the blade to mirror finish, make pins to fit the handle to the blade, find and do a japanese style cord wrap.

Awesome work there Mathandan!
What did you dye the handle and the scabbard with?
A closer snap of the spine and the sheathed knife would be helpful.
