What happened to the Trichy Rifle?
All the fanfare and backslapping that was going on when they announced it has quietly died away.
Will this rifle ever see service? Does anyone know?

Who's word would you take that of gun intellectuals or the soldier who says that he's used it and that it will do the needful.
I have shot a few round through one and feel that you can't go wrong mainly because the caliber is fine and the 5.56mm is very accurate. You can shoot less than half inch groups at 30m with the same Insas. the charging handle is inconvenient but the army 'ustaads' drill the soldier how to rack it with their left handle.
Call it what you will but our soldiers will make the damn thing work with their typical no nonsense and no complaints attitude.

Only the IOFB can mess up making an AK47 clone. I guess, greater chance for making money is factored into all these 'redesigns'.

Then why bother wasting tax payers money since the mid 1980s on it ???
The FN FAL copy was and is good enough and what it can't do, the Kalashnikov is at hand to fill the gaps.
I am surely not donning the title of a gun intellectual here but would certainly like to know how all that tax payers money (mine, yours and everyone else's) went down the drain................

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Reducing the rate of fire can be as simple as replacing a spring,in some cases. What is the point of having a higher rate of fire.IDIOTS wasting our money.

Gives bragging rights to OFB during press confrences about the technological prowess they have and that they are manufacturing rifles which fire more ammo per minute than AK-47. The papers publish it with glee and ignorant masses once again will feel proud of OFB for giving this nation masterpieces like Anmol, Ashani, and now TRICHY.

Apparently, the Indian army as begun trials for new assault rifles, I’ve no idea which one they would go for, but I guess it’s a step in the right direction and it’s about time that the Indian Army got rid of the ghastly abomination called the INSAS.

Re: Suitable replacement for Insas rifle?
Dear Fantumfan,
If this would be the the thinking of the taxpayers, that no R & D work should be done and just blindly adopt what others countries had invented then the end result will be definitely similer as it is happenning/ appearing in the latest outcomings in defence deals.
Many times, I was a member of the committies constituated for procurement of weapons (small arms) made by foreign companies and during test fires many weapons gives awesome results in all aspects, but (again think..BUT) the purchase for once is not the solution, just because mostly companies are having their patents even for their safty sheers too, and the terms and conditions for further repairing and maintenance of foreign made weapons is not only a tedious task but much more expensive resulting in more burden on we taxpayers.
I will not say that the quality of IOF products are superb but its true that they are really satisfactory...
and dear FPS russia...it would be much better for all and will specially increase my knowledge if you can describe your GYAAN about the marks set by indian armed forces and how they are obsolete..??? Had any of the magazines you read ..ever gives the outcomes of the Joint Forces Exercises which are conducted in India and abroad and participated by many countries including India..??/??
If ever you could manage to get what confidential reports are prepared then only you could be able to judge .. so my sincere request is this that think again before making any nice comments plz...

As others have mentioned, INSAS is a good design let down by poor quality manufacturing.

Re: Suitable replacement for Insas rifle?
On the contrary if every tax payer in this country hollered for answers about where their hard earned money is wasted, then it might actually result in effective spending of their money and reduction/elimination of kickbacks in defence deals.
R&D on infantry weapons is a sob story whichever way one looks at it. Their productionising, enough has been said already. When it comes to defence deals, the matter should be delegated to bunch of shrewd, result oriented (for the nation) negotiators. These deals are always loaded in favour of the seller, but it does not always have to be so.
The middle path is to have a two prong approach. Import and license manufacture a world class weapon and at the same time learn from its good features and come up with a design of your own and manufacture it with fanatic precision. Get the private sector involved because the government is lousy at running any industry. And I mean any industry one can think of.
I feel that this country needs a dependable infantry rifle and more dependable ammo more than an Agni V or an INS Arihant, because the former will be used every hour of the day for years to come, the latter two, almost never........
