Hello to everyone from an inexperienced enthusiast r2i

Post by vardu » Tue Apr 24, 2012 9:33 am

Hi everyone

I am an NRI/OCI card holder who is in Chennai now. I love reading westerns and used to spend time at Marina Beach shooting balloons. Surprisingly though, when I went to the US,I never did get time for shooting and maybe once a year , I used to try out the air rifle.

I am now flying back to the US in a couple of weeks and have renewed interested in shooting / target practice and am interested in bringing back my old or a newer one.

I tried contacting the local (Chennai rifle club - Ms Beulah) clubs as well as NRAI, delhi, but there has been no response so far and in fact after weeks or phone calls/emails it has been down right discouraging. Beulah, the lady in the chennai club seems to be insisting that there are no open slots and even when they open there is a donation of 50K EACH YEAR ( this is aside from the yearly fees and other expenses!)

Since all I am interested in is just plinking the occasional tin can and paper targets with a .177 , should I just not bother with these clubs?

BTW after going through multiple searches in this forum - I arrived at the conclusion that I can bring the air rifle with me through checked in baggage and since it is my old used gun and not a firearm - it doesn't require a licence or duty.

In any case I am glad that I found this forum that brings together folks with love for shooting.

Cheers

thanks for the welcome.

I wouldn't mind a pcp but since I am a novice and therefore would like to play around with a spring gun before investing more money and getting a PCP. From what I read in these forums - it is an extra step and money (depending on the model) to take care of the air pump, tank, and would be difficult to obtain CO2 cartridges on a regular basis in india.

Besides if I buy a new PCP in the next month before coming back , even if I don't need a license, will it not be subject to 35% duty at the airport?

Please search for "Compendium on Import Policy of India" in google -> once on the page of the website -> go to the box that says "ITC(HS)Code:" -> type 93 and click search -> go to item code 9304. You will find all the applicable duties, tariffs, cvd, educational cess etc.

Thanks for the pointer. In fact it is quite a helpful site for concise additional information as well.
