SVD Dragunov in India?

Post by SirFrancisDrake » Sun Apr 08, 2012 1:49 am

Is it true that the factory in India produces the SVD Dragunov, or a copy? Any information would be appreciated!

Cheers!

I sincerely hope that India will use the likes of PSGs and Barrets along with bolt-action like M700 in place of that obsolet Dragunov.

saw some alleged indian ammo. different in color and metallurgy to the cryllic ammo.
did not fire the damned thing though.. trusted the 1980 vintage ammo , still made a bang and grouped well.
had two cases split though.

I doubt whether IOF is making the gun or its ammunition. The quality of IOF ammunition, when compared with other manufacturers around the world, does not seem to be very good or reliable. Just read the posts of nagarifle and cottage cheese in this thread, Ministry of Defense of U.K. had imported around 42 million 9 mm parabellum cartridges from the IOF. But the cartridges were found to be seriously substandard and after a series of misfires, the entire consignment was scrapped at a large cost http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3054

agreeing to the substandard part but that does not stop them making it here now does it !
some post by a member also tells of the high esteem our 9mm pistol commands abroad.
ever attend a range firing with the services ?

Yes agree that it surely does not stop them from making SVD Dragunov, but are they really making it? They might be making it but they do not appear to have mentioned it on their website for some reason.

If 9 mm pistol commands high esteem abroad then IOF might be getting orders for export and exporting it. Or at least the import of 9 mm pistols by government could have been stopped.

No haven't attended a range firing with the services. If you could please share what are the results of range firing of services telling. That arms and ammunition made by IOF meet or exceed the competition?

Consistently producing quality products is usually a matter of organization's culture, pride and reputation. Experience of civilians with quality of IOF arms and ammunition is surely not very encouraging.

The SVD is not a particularly sophisticated weapon, and with its lousy ergonomics could have well been designed by IOF. The standard scope however is a little different given its built in ranging functions and night vision capabilities.

As far as ammo goes, by and large they use the standard 7.62x54 which isnt brilliant either. Additionally it might be cheaper to import the ammo than manufacture it.

I founf buying 7.62x39 cheaper than reloading it.

Milsurp/Mil ammo is generally not desinged to be match quality, even for sniper rifles. The one exception in terms of quality and consistency is the Swiss GP11 round.

good boy mentor !
you misunderstood the high esteem i mentioned as sarcasm for genuine praise.
rest of the post is not really relevant as what do we compare the ammo to ?
slingshots with marbles ?
not much of a choice i think. the part about the range firing we can discuss offline if we have the good fortune to meet. there are a few laughs in that part , actually more than a few.

I am confused as they do not state on their website that they produce them in India. I am looking for a picture of a few Indian SVD Dragunov rifles. Anybody know definitely whether they are produced in India?
