Hey friends,
i would like to buy a 12 bore single barrel gun. which gun manufacturer i must select and what specification is best for this 12 bore,like 36 inch or 32", foreign or Indian made etc....

Shotgun barrel length has negligible effect on its range/velocity or pattern of shot. Select the length of barrel you are comfortable with. For home defense situation, you may need to swing the barrel quickly and shoot, a short and light barrel will be more suitable. For a longer distance shooting, a longer and heavier barrel can be chosen.

Actually my gun use will be more for games than self defense so i think i will opt 36"
can u please help me with the manufacturer, some of my friends told me about Shaktiman ,Sujatha etc Indian made
Please suggest me some good Indian and foreign makers....

Be careful about "foreign makes" since import of firearms is practically banned since around 1985. Ensure they are not counterfeits or repaired. Also "foreign makes" will be priced much higher than Indian made guns.

Tony, what 'games' are you going to use the gun for? Informal target shooting or formal sports?
In the case of the latter, the vast majority prefer over under shotguns. Your options are very limited with a sbbl.

Tony, Have you ever handled a shotgun with 36 inch barrels, I am assuming you have not. It can become really unwieldy. During my early days in India my uncle had an Iver Johnson gun with 36 inch barrels, it was a pain to carry ,point and shoot quickly. It was mostly left at home in favor of other guns with shorter barrels.

I have a lot of shotguns and find the 28-30 inch the best. There is no noticeable difference in velocity of the shots because of the barrel length. I have even used 26 inch barrels and found no difference, other than handling qualities.

Most of the new guns manufactured today have 26 , 28 & 30 inch barrels. The longer barrel were needed in the old black powder days when it took longer to burn all of the slow burning powder which is not the case with modern powders. E.J Churchill one of the leading British gun makers was an early proponent of short barrels and made many guns with 25 inch barrels with the Churchill rib.

I have one 36" single barrel, have been using it for 15 years as you said it difficult to handle but if you need an accurate shot long barrels help a lot.
Also i hasnt fixed this 36" am still comparing....
among the foreign made which do you prefer??/

Tony - It again depends on what you mean by accurate shot. Most of the shots that I take with my shotguns are on the wing/flying when hunting quail/pheasants etc. for which a 36 inch barrel would be a handicap. Also no one would ever use a 36 inch barrel for skeet. You can be sure that 36 inch barrels are no more relevant based on the fact that none of the leading shotgun makers in the world manufacture guns with 36" barrels unless custom ordered.

From an Indian context I would prefer any good British/German or American gun in good condition. Condition is the key. If you can find an imported gun in a good condition and the price is reasonable, go for it.

I hope you meant crop protection. Imho, a dbbl would be much better giving you the opportunity of a follow on shot immediately.
