It was very nice of you to offer this to IFG Memebers, suprised why so few people went ahead. Saw the pics of the Karambit with Slingshot. It's Hannibal Lectre Wicked...

Here's the thread where Amarendra offered to help procure knives to fellow IFGians from online forums. This is very helpful for people like me who don't use credit card, don't do online purchasing and are less technically inclined :D

PROJECT BOWIE UPDATE

Since the handle was made of hardwood, sawing etc would take a lot of time. The easiest way i fiugured was to burn the damn thing. 15 Mins of making a mess in the kitchen, the handles out. Pics for your kind ref

Now head down to a good hardware or tool store and buy a small grinder/polisher. Many are available in n around Lohar Chawl near Crawford Market.

I've tried a few grinders on my sites used by workers for polishing marble/granite mouldings, cutting etc. Most of teh grinders by Electrex or Bosch are too heavy and bulky. Was thinking of maybe an orbital sander, it's much smaller and easier to use.

I've also been toying with the idea of working on my own blades for long. What do you use ?

Moin that Griptilian looks great. Is it BM553 & for how much were you able to procure it?

My knife indulgence is scaling heights...two custom fixed blades on my way. Till I have them, and get more pictures, here are the ones that the makers' sent across. Both made in 1095 carbon steel, with RC around 58-59. Blade length on both ~3.25". Both come with a fitting kydex sheath.

Personal Survival Knife (chisel grind, with a microbevel. The patina is due to mustard and vinegar, and not damascus)

I was referring to a very small bench grinder which also accepts a buffing wheel. Also investing in a Dremel multi Tool may be good. You get plenty of attachments to grind drill and polish. Also it's small, powerful and easy to use. A bit on the costly side.
Also a set of metal files, with different profiles may come in handy.

What a great taste in knives Amar, you like Bruno seem to have a thing about smaller blades :) May I dare ask how much these custom blades set you back by. And some great production knives out there for a lot less, why customise ?

That's what Mark had earlier suggested as well. I stay in a small 400 sq.ft hen house. Don't have the luxury of space for a work bench to mount a bench grinder. That's the reason was looking for something portable like a grinder or an orbital sander(not sure if there are buffing wheels which can be attatched to orbital sanders) :?:

I've started collecting metal files, need a good power tool to speed things up. Not sure if Dremel will be available locally. Which model are you referiing to, can you please post a link, any similar alternatives by Bosh or Electrex that you can recommend.

Thanks
Moin.

About 350 for both, including shipping (shipping paid twice, since each comes from different makers). Dunno about duty and Octroi yet. Custom since the blade (Bulldog EDC) has been made exactly to my specifications, with my color choice for handles. Took about two weeks for the maker to churn it out - going back and forth with me as the blade was being made. I had one custom earlier, but that was not directed by me (I purchased it off someone on forums). I am waiting to see how good they perform. My primary aim is to compare these against production models of similar shape/size, and note the differences.

Meanwhile, yes, I do prefer blade lengths between 3 and 4", since most of the tasks that I perform are handled beautifully by these blades, and I do not require a longer blade. Secondly, it is far easy to EDC without the fear of getting on the wrong side of the law (even if you are stopped and questioned, cops do understand if you politely tell them that this was for your hiking/trekking trip).

I prefer to use all my blades, and do not collect any. If it does not get used, it gets sold (which is why you may have seen a number of blades that I offered in the recent times). My blade collection has been trimmed down to bare essentials. As Sal Glesser of Spyderco says "we'd like to be the blades in your pockets, rather than the ones in your showcase".

moin...thats a wonderful project that you have started.

please dont stop till you have finished...have an issue with waiting
my two cents: how do you feel about a slightly curved handle. greatly improves the aesthetics and handling of the knife. i would also suggest that you add a butt cap.

if its ok with you, i will make a leather sheath for it. all you need to do is send a cardboard model of the finished knife to me. :)

the orbital sander is a good choice for finishing and polishing. it removes metal much slower than a rotary grinder and hence gives greater control. not a good choice if you plan to grind bevels onto a knife blank. an angle grinder is better suited for the latter.

P.S. the dremel rotary tool is just wonderful. go for the Dremel 3000 or 4000 model. see if you have someone buy it in USA (HOMEDEPOT) and bring it down. the Dremel 3000 costs about USD 50~60 as compared to USD 120 ~ 140 here. you will need a step down transformer (cost ~ Rs.1000) to bring voltage from 240 to 120.

Wonderful, that's not as expensive as I thought these would be. Great that you are a user Amar, but we collectors/hoarders are as passionate about knives as users like you mate
