i do agree that de-horning may prevent poaching but whats the point of having one horny rhino without the horn? one goes to the park to look at the one horn Rhino, not to look at flat nose.

air patrolling is out of the question for two reasons, 1/ no choppers
2/ not natural and hard to stay in the air for 24/7 covering all the park area.

Or a miniature GPS tracking device inserted into the horn, though battery life could be a limitation.

The dogs are doing a fantastic job.
Nitro Express and his team caught a couple of poachers yesterday in the jungles of Assam.
He was also instrumental in darting and trapping the Leopard which created havoc in Guwahati (killing one person) and injuring three on 7th January 2012.

"Maarne waale sa bada bachaane waala hota hai."

They sucessfully released the Leopard {which had mauled 4 people (killing one) in Guwahati } back to the wild (Manas).

Nitro Express and his team caught another Leopard today in Assam.
The second this month.
I have requested him to post his experience here.He is in the process of jotting down some really exciting stuff. Just wait guys . There is some real nail bitting stuff coming up soon...............from the Land of the seven sisters.

The North East edition of The Telegraph carried the following news a while back - Nitro Express

Dog traces poachers’ route
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
Guwahati, Jan. 17: The Belgian Malinois dog, Jorba, which has been brought from Slovakia to help forest officials in Assam track down poachers, has been able to provide some clues about the killing of a female rhino in Kaziranga on January 15.

Though the rhino died after being shot by poachers, they could not take out its horn because of the alertness of the staff. The incident happened at Bagori range and under the Kowaimari anti-poaching camp.

“The forest staff posted there reacted immediately and fired at the poachers who had to flee,” a source in the park said. So, the horn remained intact, he added. “The dog was requisitioned yesterday by Kaziranga National Park authorities and it trekked for about 4.5km,” a source said today.

The dog managed to track the footprints and some other evidences, such as empty shells of cartridges. It also located the place from where the poachers had begun their journey. “Though the culprits had escaped, the dog got to the place where some people who had helped the poachers were residing,” the official said.

Two persons have been picked up in this connection. “The dry weather also helped the dog track down the place of poachers,” the source said. It was “amazing” to know that the dog could trace the route, he added.

Jorba, financed by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, has been brought to Assam by Aaranyak, an NGO. The foundation has been supporting a wildlife crime-monitoring programme since 1994 with Aaranyak. The dog was earlier put to service at Pobitora wildlife sanctuary on October 14 after a rhino was killed.
