Put me down as a "mouth carrier" too. As mentioned, it was one of the standard methods to carry some "back in the day". On top of that, I had a friend who accidentally swallowed his on more than one occasion and he's still alive with no ill effects.

Not to say it is a good or healthy idea, but if it was any measure of toxic we would have discovered that a long time ago.

Sometimes if you want to get rid of the gun, you have to pick the gun up.

Sometime back, lead was the standard for water pipes in India (till mid 1980's it was common across the globe). The word "plumbing", "plumber", etc. is derived from the Latin name - plumbum - for lead. Lead was the most common paint for kids' toys till then. Most scientific studies talk in terms of "significant long-term exposure" - a term highly subjective at best. The "long-ness" of the "long-term" is not defined, neither is "significance".
Moral of the story? Unless the lead pipes, paint, leaded petrol, etc. we were surrounded by as kids failed to make us crazy, highly unlikely that a few pellets will. More likely that we might slip up in the gun safety rules, and cause grief worse than lead poisoning.
If you are a non-smoker, spending a couple of minutes in a room with me ain't gonna kill you, is it?
Cheers!
