Dug out a couple more from my Argentinian trip.

The red stag with his fantastic set of antlers was looking directly towards the rising Sun
mesmerised by it. I call this one "Suryanamaskar".

Ghural and Langoor on a cliff

Post by skeetshot » Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:35 pm

ghural on cliff.jpg
Spotted between Ramgargh and Nathuakhan near Nainital. That is a sheer rock and mud cliff, very treacherous, and how he got there and what he was doing there is a mystery to me.

The Langoor monkey had roots and branches to hold on to , but the Ghural only had his nimble feet.

Thank you for my first real look at the Ghural, had read about them but never seen one.
Just can't imagine what its doing out there...a possible salt lick?

Yes, in Ahmednagar, the numbers have multiplied to several thousands. I am quite sure its a female because a male has a distinctive darkish coat which stands out from afar. :)

Lovely snap hvj1
skeetshot is right. That is a young male. You see those twisted horns. Only the males have horns.
You are right about the colour. The females are the same colour .....minus the horns.
But the males may vary from fawn colour, to fawn mixed with shades of black , to jet black and white.
They are the fastest land animals in the Indian sub continent.
We have some in Sambhal , a district not far from my farm. I will try and get some snaps of a bachelor herd when I go there next.
Beautiful click .

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents here, the males change their color to darker black shade as they grow older; the above picture is of a young male, give him 3 years and he will be dark black with at least 18 to 22 inches of the twisted horns.

I also wanted to add a couple of cents to this thread saying that it is certainly unusual for a female of the deer species to have antlers but it is not that unheard of. A quick Google search for "doe with antlers" will bring up a long list. That being said, most of what I read was about Whitetailed, Blacktailed and Mule deer and some Roe deer.
