Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
XL,
I forgot about the FN. Beautiful gun. As reliable as an AK47, with more punch and accuracy. And the lines are like a super model. A buck shot loaded 870 sits in my gun room, so I agree with you on the shotgun. I have cleared many a jam with autoloading shotguns, not so with a pump. If I could only have one bolt action, and money wasn't an issue, (it always is!) it would be a Sako. Good Lord the Fins make a great rifle. Defensive handgun.........Glock.

Yes the FN is a beautiful weapon. I especially like the cocking handle on the left. As for reliability compared to the kitchen utensil, try burying a FN in sand, and then see if it works.

Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
I'll definitely grant you that weapons made with the AK style action are superb in the reliability department, the FAL is still pretty reliable even when handled in muddy/sand conditions. Below is a torture test that would see a soldier severely disciplined if he let his weapon get in that condition. The Israelis machined sand grooves in their bolts to help the weapon function better in the desert.MoA wrote:Yes the FN is a beautiful weapon. I especially like the cocking handle on the left. Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
The question has a lot of things one could read into it. If, by saying self defense and hunting together, one takes this requirement to mean a SHTF "doomsday" sort of scenario, I think that my Marlin .22 would be my choice.
If this were not the case (which might imply that self defense would take a back seat to hunting), I think I would like a 98 Mauser with a "toothpick" German style stock, butterknife bolt handle, horn buttplate, and lots and lots of oakleaf motif engraving.
If I didn't have enough to afford this, my Finn M39 would work.
If self defense and hunting are to have equal priority, but there is no SHTF situation, then I'm satisfied with my SKS short barreled "paratrooper".
Not that any of the other submissions are bad, wrong, or worse than mine -- it's just that you asked for my preferences, and here they are!

Since I 'm here its a really easy question. My Marlin Model 60. Can't afford another rifle or go thru the licensing pain, so can do and have to do everything with one. Sometimes having no choice makes life simple.
To ride, to speak up, to shoot straight.

There is no loss in having just one rifle. As the saying goes, "beware of the one gun man". Besides, if the SHTF, you get your guns and ammo from your enemy.

Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
Hi
I would find it difficult to choose between the .300 and the .375 Holland and Holland magnums. On the other hand the .30-30 and the .44-40 Winchester are great for self defence as well as medium game. The .250-3000 Savage is also a great cartridge. The .280 Ross is also a very versatile cartridge for every type type of game depending upon the loading, from duck to big game. the cartridge is not easily available though.
Regards.

Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
Not really cutting down your choice but my personal preference is that if I have to have only one rifle and it is to be a centerfire rifle, I would choose a rifle cartridge and not a pistol cartridge.BowMan wrote:Winchester model92. There is no question about it. Chambered in .45 LC.
I I had to choose, right now, to only be able to keep one rifle, I would keep one of my .22's. At least I would be able to afford to shoot it regularly.
Dev,
Nothing wrong with the Marlin mod. 60.
Good honest weapon. Reliable, accurate and durable.

Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
In a scenario like the one described above, i would opt for a rifle chambered for a round for which ammunition would be plentiful. Period. After all, i dont know how long my stocks will last, or how long i will be around my stocks.
I would go for a rifle chambered for either a .22LR or a 5.56mm NATO round.
Now, the .22 is quieter which is a pro while the con being that its effective range is not as much as that of the 5.56
If i am hunting, i need one good shot to take home meat, so the noise wont be an issue. And if i am in a self defence situation, if i cant run away and have to use my weapon, i would want one with more energy than the .22 round. It will be a bit more forgiving considering shot placement and engagement can be at farther distances.
Hence 5.56 NATO it is for me

At present a teen sau pandrah Why? Because that is what I have and it will kill everything on two legs and most on four.
In a situation like this, what would be really useful would be a drilling or maybe a shotgun with rifled chokes .

Re: If you couldonly have one rifle
Well carrying a Winchester 92 in .45 LC has its advantages. It can take down deer sized game in medium ranges which is ideal for most jungle/thicket conditions.
Depending on its size a gun should carry between 12 - 10 cartridges.
Anther added factor is that if you carry a revolver then you need not carry separate ammunition for both. I think these are also important considerations.
