423 mauser rife

Can never forget this rifle,THE 404 Jeffery (10.75x74) cause it's very deeply etched in my mind. as this blimey caliber has made me half deaf in my right ear. No fault of the rifle though, but one must avoid taking over enthu rooky on a serious shoot if possible. The year was 1971, ban on tiger hunting but Leopards were still on the menu. Always loved and preferred this rifle to 423 Mauser (10.75x68) and 425 Westley Richards. Never owned one but belonged to one of our shooting buddies.
This grand rifle is worth its weight in silver (in today's scenario) if found in good shooting condition. Will dish out a pic if I can get hold of this pal.

Hello everybody. My dad had a 423 Mauser made by FN of Belgium. He sold it in 1968 or so. He shot 2 leopards with in in 1958. I would like to buy one for old times' sake. Ideally it would be dad's old rifle which would have his name written neatly inside a solid canvas covered wooden case. Any 423 Mauser would be fine. Does anyone know of such a rifle for sale? Or a 404 Jeffery?

you can't use this gun on regular basis.
this is purely a hunting machine,nothing else.
if you buy,all you will be doing is showing to your friends and relatives.so think twice before you go for it.

hi friend big bore are no use here.
even most of our shooting club do not have range's for these.so do think before you go for it.

Last I saw a .404 Jeffrey for sale with a dealer in Ahmedabad, but you seem to be located in New Zealand so how would expect to purchase it?

I have good contacts at top levels to get a license. I will be in India next week - for 1 month. Once I get the license I can also get export permit.

I know that such rifles are in India but no ammo & no chance of using. Here in NZ I can get reloading dies, bullets, powder etc. we also hunt here & can go to australia for Buffalo.

I always wanted one big bore like the old classic types. I have Tikka 222. Kimber 7mm08, Sako 280 Ackley Imp, Simson Mauser 9.3X62, Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5X54 MS & 9.5X57. I want to add a classic big bode to the collection.

Converting a 10.75x68 to a 10.75x73 (.404) is not going to make it a more viable option, the .423 is as white an elephant here as is the .404. You will have to slug the bore first to ensure your bore diameter, there are many .422 and .418 cal variants in both the .423 and the .404, also you will be running higher chamber pressures as the .423 fires a 347-grain pill @ approximately 2200fps, while the .404 lobs a 400-grainer at almost the same velocity, I'm not saying that it cannot be done, it can, but i wouldn't trust anyone to do a cartridge conversion over here.

Then its better to look for .423 cartridges instead of looking for converting it in India. Please help me out in getting the .423 cartridges if u get across them somewhere.

Also, is it legal to fabricate your own gun stocks or sights or mounts? Please clarify someone.

Converting the 423 Mauser rifle to 404 Jeffery needs real expertise. Firstly it is a re-chamber job & you need the right reamer & go / no-go gauge. secondly the case head is bigger & the bolt face needs to be made larger. Finally the action rails and magazine & follower will also need to be modified to handle the larger 404 cartridge. I doubt that there is a qualified & skilled enough gunsmith in India who can do this correctly.

The legal issue is another matter.

saw a .423 calibre mauser rifle. hadnt seen anything or heard of anything of this calibre. the bullets were huge. a single bullet was a fistfull and cud be used for stabbing. nib condition , last shot was fired 30 years back. lil.
