Which of this spring is more powerful?
Spring 1:
Wire dia: 3mm
Total coil 35
Coil Id: 12mm
Spring 2:
Wire Dia: 3.2 mm
Total coil 35
Coil Id 14.5 mm
Both having same quality of wire.

This will go to my recently acquired Stoeger x10 Briha.
You know I am very surprised to see only one reply

Re: Which of this spring is more powerful?
I guess spring No. 2 would be more powerful as larger id and wire dia.
not sure though, you can test both of them using bathroom scale, or go to any lab. who tests materials for construction projects, they have apparatus for compression test ( I work at national highway projects and had seen compression test m/c. at their lab )
hope this helps
regards
pritam

Hi Briha,
Sure will share the pic once my gun is all set right.
Yet to understand the right spring for my gun.
Hi Pritam,
Thanks for your input. I was told the spring 1 is more recommended but not sure why.
I am open for more insight.

Re: Which of this spring is more powerful?
That is like the joke about the person buying the sports car and asking which color is faster, the black one or the red one?
The only real way to tell is install and test them both, and then pick. If I had to make a wild guess, I would weigh them and choose the heavier one but there are so many variables anything other than a side by side comparison is really just a guess.

> You're absolutely right - there are too many variables .....eg:
1. The dimensions of the receiver
2. Piston weight & its tolerence with respect to its fitment in the receiver
3. The dimensions of the rear guide & top hat

Sometimes if you want to get rid of the gun, you have to pick the gun up.

Spring that they use in sofa, I think the dia of the wire they use is 6mm. The spring is so soft that a kid can compress it fully.PRITAM PATEL wrote:I guess spring No. 2 would be more powerful as larger id and wire dia.

you are right that sofa springs can be compressed by a child.SUFFIX wrote:

in this case you need to check the material of spring ( I believe that sofa springs are made from Zink plated common steel not a proper spring steel)
10 yeas back Tim McCarri told me that he gets wire for his legendary( one still works flawlessly in my Diana-48) springs from INDIA.
He also mentioned that getting material is complete different thing after you coiled it in to a spring shape, he mentioned about heat treatment and gradually bringing it back to normal temp
I think its a different science or art ( like they makes Katana in Japan traditional way) beyond I could ever learn that much

Re: Which of this spring is more powerful?
A very simple law of physics which most school children are aware of pertaining to springs:
f = k x, where f = force or "spring power", x = distance which the spring is compressed (or expanded) and k is the spring constant.
The spring constant would therefore determine the more powerful spring.
This would then depend upon its geometry, material and heat treatment.
Thus, just having a larger dia wire is insufficient to correctly predict which would be more powerful.
Hope this is of some help.
