All through the ages, the knowledge has always ruled over the ignorance. If you read deeply and understand the history of civilization, you will find that disarming of citizens by the rulers, has never been done for preventing crimes. It was/ is/ will always be done for political reasons. Clear example of the same is mentioned in my previous post above and in another post above it. But to fool the common people, it is always done under the guise of preventing crimes. So please do not confuse yourself in believing that the disarming of citizens is done for their security. On the contrary it is always done for creating security for the rulers and for creating insecurity for those who are being ruled by them.
Police cannot be present everywhere. Even if the police is present at/ near the scene of crime, there are countless examples from all over the world, including from India when police does nothing and stands as mute spectators to the crime. It needs to be remembered, no matter what the law says, the law breakers will always carry whatever they want. The main question is not about what the attackers were carrying or not carrying. The main question is why the defenders failed to defend themselves and why they were not carrying proper tools for their self defense?

Moin,
The questions you have asked are very commonly asked by most people. I will try and answer your questions with logic. Tone doesn't carry over in a post so please do not take this as an attempt to berate or browbeat you in any way. I'm a just trying to answer your questions.
Would you rather go to court or have your loved one killed maimed or murdered?

Here you will find a list of the same bunch of people arguing some of the same things in trying to debunk Lott.
Moin,
Please also read this interview with John Lott where he answers some criticism of his findings. His answers to them will answer most of your questions.

Gun ownership by Law-abiding citizens becomes more necessary when the law & order situation deteriorates. If you don't have some way to defend yourself from criminals, your only other choice is for you and your loved ones is to take a beating (or much worse) or get killed. Criminals don't care what the law says, they will be armed regardless of any prohibitions against being armed. Only law-abiding citizens follow the laws.My question to you all Is Gun Ownership or an armed citizen really a solution to a flawed law & order and a corrupt and weak law enforcement.(I’m excluding the reasoning of gun ownership for sports).
What if the man who was brutally murdered carrying a licensed firearm 1) The firearm would have been a deterrent and maybe scared off the attackers 2) What if shot one of the attackers, wouldn’t he be in a major lengthy and expensive legal hassle, which of course if better than getting killed.

What if the dead man had been carrying a firearm and had been able to defend himself successfully?3) Worse what if the attackers instead of carrying knives, sickles and cricket stumps were themselves carrying firearms.
Ok, lets talk about the Virginia Tech shooting. What if the victims had been armed (instead of being forced to disarm by stupid college policies)? How long would the gunman have lasted? Do you think this gunman would have gone to a Police station and pulled out a gun and started shooting? No, he went to a college because he knew no one would be armed there. What about countries like US where we keep reading about school killings, shootings etc because citizens there have very easy access to all kinds of firearms.
If you get a chance, try and read More guns, less crime: understanding crime and gun-control laws By John R. Lott (Only a few pages available here)Will things not get worse with the law enforcement situation in the country with people having easy access to firearms. I know there’s a gargantuan effort being put by several members here towards RKBA and educating people about it, I’m an ordinary middle class concerned citizen who genuinely wants to understand, digest and learn more about it, and I rather question things, try to understand the logics than blindly accept and follow.

Moin,
Please remember that being armed for the sake of protecting yourself and your loved ones from burglary, mugging and other crimes of violence is one thing.
Going up against a group of armed terrorists is best left to the authorities.
