Re: Sinew availability in India
I've personally built over a dozen bows, my father (of Cherokee Indian lineage) built a LOT of bows. I do not know how many but if he came back to me in a dream said he built over 100 I would not doubt it.
When I was about 11, he built me a bow that was backed with braided fishing line. For what it was, the backing worked quite well. If I needed to back a bow and was going to use a non-traditional material, I suspect an aramid fishing line like kevlar/Spectra would work quite well and would be my first choice.

The wood for the bow that had fishing line backing was hickory if I remember. I also have an eskimo bow from the 1800's that I can take a picture of and post, that has a sinew backing but the method of attaching would work well for fishing line.Yaj wrote:What was the wood used Mark? And were these selfbows?

IMHO, most dense grained woods would probably make an acceptable bow as long as they are free from knots.

thanks for the info mate. I did not know about cat-gut. I needed sinew to back the bow and not for string.brihacharan wrote:Hi Bhairav,

BTW I enquired about cat-gut in a medical shop, but found it must costly (Rs 90 for 85 cm of thread).
I have already ordered Dacron spool for making bow-string.
Thanks Mark. In my case demin is working good.Mark wrote:I've personally built over a dozen bows, my father (of Cherokee Indian lineage) built a LOT of bows. I do not know how many but if he came back to me in a dream said he built over 100 I would not doubt it.
