Also this permit is not a must as when I travelled with British Airways (2 months ago) and KLM to USA they wanted me to pay a extra handling charges of $40, however in the end I dropped the plan of carrying a air rifle.

The amount of tension and confusion is way too much when you land in Indian Airports. If Customs end up opening your other bags as you would be waiting in the red channel and find / evaluate goods above $500 (Even your brand new DSLR or New Laptop can go over and above the limit) be prepared to pay 30% flat duty on all your personal products purchased.

Mark, Welcome on board. There are whole lot of information around bringing in Rifles through your checked in baggage.

Kindly take the time to read threads and try to search for your specific questions. I am sure this forum has an answer for it.

1. Make sure the airline you will be using permits the carriage of guns, even airguns. If possible get this in writing to avoid any hassle at the airport.

2. Get a good qulaity gun case. You saw what happened to Deepak's. If the airline does not specify a guncase, then you could remove stock frm action and pack it in your suitcase.

3. Assuming you land late at night in India, declare the air-rifle at Customs. They will give you a detention receipt for the air-rifle.

4. Go back the next day or whenever it suits you to the airport. A custom's officer will accompany you and the rifle to the Arms Section of the Commissioner of Police's office. Here you would need to get a No Objection Certificate saying that the gun is an air-rifle and does not require a firearm licence.

5. Return to the airport, hand over the NOC, pay the duty and walk out with the air-rifle.

This is how it is done in Bombay. The procedure may wary in other cities, though it should not. Hopefully, if you get a customs officer who can confirm it's an air-rifle then perhaps there would be no need to get the NOC.

hey Mack The Knife can you mail me a copy of the noc given by the Arms Section of the Commissioner of Police's office cause my air rifle and air pistol is still at the mumbai coustoms and the police departments people are all new now and they are asking me to provide a reference to how to give the noc . well i told them about how to give but still they are not understanding. so please help. you cam mail me at thanks a lot.

the reference is simple its on official paper, giving your details and details of the air gun also stating that it is not a firearm and does not require a licence and have not objection for you to own the same and thus should be relished.

you can do a draft of your own based on the above and take it to them.

I have been following the thread for quite some time now. I am planning to get this through the Bangalore Airport, through Emirates.
Also, Emirates' website says as long is it securely packed in the suitcase, it doesnt need a hard case. Does that work?

normal routine is to declare the goods with the invoices.

Don't try walk through the green channel as your rifle would have been scanned even before in comes to Conveyor belt.

Also customs guys will know the difference between a Gun case and a Guitar case

Sent 500+ pellets through my friend to India. No questions asked( He in fact had and LED TV for which customs stopped him)..

500+ Pellets would be probably 1 or 2 tins.

Which won't be an issue. Unless you plan to carry a dozen tins. You're bag might get into the scanner
