Lets plan an IFG Blood donation Camp

Post by Safarigent » Wed Sep 14, 2011 3:10 pm

Why dont we have IFG blood donation camps.
Not only will we, as a responsible group of individuals , be doing a good deed; but it will also reflect good on the community as a whole.
I just donated a unit of blood today and i was told that they collect barely a 100 units a day and even that is not enough!!!!
Think about it guys. We might all be doing it individually, but why not get together and do something good collectively?
a lot of people who get hurt in road accidents are poor people who cant pay for blood and have to rush from blood bank to blood bank even if they can pay for it, searching for the right blood type.
ofcourse we all get together for fishing and shoots and hunts and drinks and beers and bbqs.
why not for blood donation?

jaundice is just a symptom of many diseases.
depending on what caused jaundice (icterus) the situation may vary.
from your post it seems you had viral hepatitis. is that true?

im not sure if the camps still provide donors a choice of tea/coffee/glucon-d. If not, ill sponsor that.
I will also sponsor a free clayshoot with tuition to every ifg blood donor. (if they ever visit uk; lifetime validity).

yes there are plenty but rather than that, go and ask the doctor who has your file and ask him for your diagnosis. also in future, try to remember the names of the illness you've had in the past (if difficult to remember these tongue twisting names, write down). It will help you in the future when the doctor asks for your past medical history. Thus also help in adequately managing any illness in the future and also protect them and others from possivle blood borne infections.

Thanks for the reply
There is no standard test /single benchmark to determine whether anybody can "donate" blood or not.

The usual practice in camps is like this :--

a) Group of persons interested in donating blood contact organizations of their choice and indicate a venue and agree on a date.
The organization usually asks for a certain minimum of donors to be present.

b) On the D Day, the organization makes all arrangements for collecting and storing blood , refreshments for the donors etc.

c) After collecting blood, 5 standard tests are collected in their ( organizations') labs. On passing all the tests, the blood
is stored , else it is thrown away. All the donors are given a 'blood report', and a donor's card. A donor receiving an
unsatisfactory blood report can safely conclude that his blood was not preserved. Therefore any organization diligently following
testing procedures can ensure that unwanted blood is not injected to any person.

This procedure was observed during a blood donation camp for Lion's club organized by our company on 15th August. However ,
I do not know--

Whether the donor's card is life long certificate of good blood report / tests are done every time.

A sad aspect of blood donation is that a huge quantity of good quality blood goes waste because of improper storage/negligence
or lack of storage facilities in India.

And before you ask, I don't remember those 5 disqualifying diseases , except that one of them is AIDS.

No, tests are done every time - chap might have been infected with HIV in the meantime , can't keep tabs on what he does between donations!!
And before you ask, I don't remember those 5 disqualifying diseases , except that one of them is AIDS.

Any disease which can spread through blood, including viral fever, AT THE TIME OF DONATION, will disqualify you. Else, HIV, Asperger's, Thalassemia, any cancer, anaemia (some types, AFAIK), haemophilia (issues in clotting). Common thread is that the diseases should not be communicable by blood, and the donor should not suffer / die. Any blood bank / hospital with BB facilities / pathologist should be able to give the total info.

Any chances of this activity in Mumbai?

Cheers,

Blood bank India and Rotary club can also be contacted for the same, they can take care of everything. But the point is that how many are gone turn up, You will have to organize it in 1 city.
May we can organise a get together for RKBA and in that have these ppl invited for setting up there camp.
Jst putting my thoughts
