Now that`s what I call Muzzle Blast !!!
During the course of an email conversation about naval guns a friend sent me this photograph of three 16" guns being fired simultaneously from a US Iowa class battleship.
Totally Awesome !!!
As can be seen, the forward guns are slightly out of sync`.

Hi Sharief,
Those are very interesting photos.
Would you know the medium through which the bullet and pellet were shot through in the last pic?
Mack The Knife

Rusty, I have a Guns and Ammo that has a pic of a Glock 22C I think it is, that is similar. I googled for this term "schlieren photography", I'm sure you can read more online.

No shockwave penpusher but a heck of a cloud of smoke - what is that, a human cannonball or something ?

- And I thought it was a human cannonball gun !
I know that up to Medieval times rotting animals used to be catapulted into besieged towns/cities/castles but I suspect that practice had ceased by WWI !

No shock wave but would have a hell of a muzzle blast.

A project killed by Canadian politics and American inter-service rivalry.
The 16" HARP gun was the same type of naval gun shown on the battleship above. The barrels were progressively lengthened to increase velocity however. The photograph must have been taken at the initial Barbados test facility.
In 1966 the HARP/Martlet combination achieved an altitude of 180km from a firing at the Yuma, Arizona launch facility - still the world altitude record for a gun launched projectile.
A very simple, very clever idea which had far more potential than that realised.
