Old 2nd Hand Imported vs. New IOF Guns
Re: Small Arms Analysis for Purchase Decision
Asif,
As per the guidelines on issuing PB licenses, only an Army officer who has been issued a PB firearm prior to 1984 can get a license for it.

Re: Small Arms Analysis for Purchase Decision
Good guess! My guess is that 2nd hand ones in the Market must be commanding premium now with the limited numbers being released every week from Kanpur.
I had gone handgun shopping with a friend from Chennai a few months back (November or December) and one of the shops, Asian Armoury to be precise, quoted Rs. 90,000/- for a secondhand IOF .32 revolver.

Dear all,
Thanx again for all replies posted.
I cannot go for anything more than .32 as my licence is for NPB Rev/Pis.
I am almost through with the process of decision making & as of now will go for .32 Mark rev of IOF.
But can any body tellme whether is there any significant improvement -technical and metallurical-in IOF Pistol. As the IOF Kosipore chaps told me there are but could not explain it to me.
Only good thing in the pistol I heard was that probably it is foreign made. any takers for it?
I was surprised that in Rev Vs Pistol poll on IFG site the pistol is winner but all advices and preferrences for all were for revolvers.Stunning.....

MajorSKUpreti ,
The IOF .32 pistol is made in India, including the barrel. It has the frame of the Colt Model 1903 pocket pistol and the slide of the FN Browning Model 1910 pistol. As far as the barrel being imported, you just have to look down a clean one to see that it has all the hall marks of shoddy IOF manufacturing. There are scratch marks in the grooves running parallel to the lands as a result of inadequate cutting oil during the drilling and the rifling process,in most,if not all of them.

Dear All IFGians,
after due analysis I purchased a .32 from Field Gun Factory and learned a few points mentioned hereunder,
1. The Revolver post budget is 85 Rs costlier.
2. It is best to reach early as they give only 14 revs in each of the two batch although they are supposed to give 50 per day.Shift one 8-11 am and Shift Two-2.30-4.30 pm.
3. due to elections KF ammunition is costing Rs 47 instead of Rs 32. So buy it from your home state or buy it later after election frm Kanpur.
4. Never land up on any festive occassion like holi etc at Kanpur. Please check all these details from localites prior to landing there.
5.Buy holsters from there.
6.Use all means to get a good piece. In simple language call it Jack.
7.It is said that Field Gun factory (FGK)weapon is beeter than small arms factory weapon. Grip is one of the main differences.
8. Mark II is a good looking weapon when compared to a IOF Pistol which looks crude.
9. Do not carry any thing to FGK except of licence ,documents money etc. No cell phones, suitcases allowed.
10.Do not forget to ,in the ghaste of things, get the gurantee card signed and satmped.
11. I can be called for any relevant info on this purchase only at 09835029258 6pm-0930pm on any weeek days.
12. overall it is a good experience. i will keep updating results of my firing on this site.

Sumit,
Congrats and happy shooting.
WRT NSP weapons just checked last week with the OS Directorate,MGO Branch, the waiting period is close to 10 yrs these days.

Well, I heard the opposite... the SAF weapon is better compared to FGK... maybe we could compare both the revolvers sometime and get a true analysis of the facts. Still don't know if u are based in Delhi ?
'Good Piece' ?? Aren't they all brand new and tested ?
I've pasted pics of my revolver on the forum, u cud paste a couple of your gun too..

Sumit,
I have seen Goncalo alves type wood grips on IOF 32's, locally made .In case you are interested, try Faridabad Gun House, details given in Dealers section.
Slightly oversize, but looks good on the revolver.
Best

Imported Handgun
I have a Astra DBBL Shotgun and applied for a licence of a NP Bore pistol/revolver. From this forum I came to know that imported firearms are not sold in India. So, If I want to purchase a new pistol/revolver I have to purchase a IOF pistol/revolver. Is there any procedure to purchase a new imported pistol/revolver in India ? I am interested to purchase a new walther P22 (.22 bore). Any suggestion ?

Waiting Period for IOF Handguns
I called the IOF factories written below to konw the waiting period to get the weapon after application. The result is as follows:
RFI - Ichapur - .22 Revolver - 3 years
GSF - Cossipore - .32 Pistol - 9 months
SAF - Kanpur - .32 Revolver - 4/5 months
As there is no other option to buy a new handgun in India except IOF and the second-hand imported weapns cost unreasonably high, so, are the waiting periods for the IOF weapons reasonable ?

Re: Waiting Period for IOF Handguns
There is nothing reasonable about the IOF.Neither their prices nor the waiting period nor even their firearms.
If a person obtains a license for a pistol/revolver for self defence and is made to wait for 5months to 3 years, what is he going to use for protecting his life and property during the intervening period?
a)The difficulty in obtaining a firearms license in the first place followed by
b) the difficulty in locating a good firearm and the high cost of one when you find it
c)allied with the low quotas of cartridges and the high cost of them means that no. of people who own firearms ,especialy hand guns, is limited.
d)It has also meant that the very purpose of having the Arms Act and Rules is defeated.
The framers of the Indian Constitution ,in their wisdom ,decided to leave the right to bear arms out of the list of Fundamental Rights even thought the INC had included it in the list of Fundamental Rights that it said would be include in any Constitution of free India. There was a debate in the Constituent Assembly on this and amendments to introduce the Right to bear arms in the list of fundamental rights moved by some members were rejected. The Indian Union continued with the Indian Arms Act of 1878 that was designed to restrict ownership of firearms by Indians till 1959.The purpose of the Indian Arms ammendment bill was to enable the acquisition of firearms by Indians for lawful purposes while also preventing the acquisition of firearms by criminal elements. The Indian Arms Act of 1959 has failed on both accounts. The policies of the Indian govt. and the general suspicion of the police of gun owners, has meant that Indian gun lovers are a harassed lot.
