Please explain what you mean by deadly. The .315 cartridge with 244 grain soft nose bullet (IOF common load AFAIK) produces a muzzle energy of 2200 ft·lbf and muzzle velocity of 2010 ft/s according to Frank Barnes in his book Cartridges of the World. The .303 cartridge with 174 grain HPBT bullet produces a muzzle energy of 2,408 ft·lbf and muzzle velocity of 2,500 ft/s according to Accurate Powder. (Police my use 174 grain FMJ though, Wolf website lists 174 grain FMJ has 2461 ft/s) According to the above info both cartridge has identical ballistics. The only thing that will determine the 'deadliness' of the cartridge is the skill of the shooter.

ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

I guess because they are the most commonly available bores - one prohibited and the other NPB .

303 is prohibted bore
315 is non prohibted
it is old british era classification which does not allow civilians to use 303, so that cartridges which are meant for armed forces should not be misused by civilians, 315 was later lauched as n.p.b

Waquar Ahmad Afaque,
I'd like to give the book to you in PDF format but the copyright laws prevents me from doing so, I read a old edition of the book (8th if I remember correctly) in a library and xeroxed the important parts.

It depends where it hits you and from how much distance. .303 is comparatively more accurate, has more muzzle velocity and range than .315 otherwise both are enough "deadly" if hit at proper place on human body. Specifications of both the cartridges are given at IOF website:
1) .315 cartridge http://ofbindia.nic.in/products/data/am ... /sc/14.htm
2) .303 cartridge http://ofbindia.nic.in/products/data/am ... n/sc/8.htm
Which one is prohibited & which one is NPB & why?
axe has already clarified which is PB and NPB. This PB and NPB was started during Lord Curzon's time(1899-1904). The reason was to ensure that ammunition with government forces should not be interchangeable with civilian ammunition. This was done to ensure that if a mutiny like 1857 may happen again, the Indian soldiers and people will not be able to supply each other with their extra ammunition. Unfortunately our babus still have that mindset of British(distrust of armed forces and people)and kept this PB/NPB thing alive in Arms Rules 1962.

Hi Waquar,
> At best you can call the .315 the sporterized version of the old .303 -
> Since there existed a demand for sporting weapons in the .30 cal the existing .303 was rechambered for suit the .315 cartridge - the neck & casing were altered.
> The .303 was not released for general use to prevent misuse of Govt ammo - hence it was ordained as a PB. The .303 ammo was made in 174grs only - since .315 was meant to be a sporting weapon the 224gr ammo was introduced.
> Basically both these calibres have similar velocity & energy, the .303 shoots a little flatter at longer ranges.
> The .315 packs more energy due to its heavier bullet weight - meant for sport & taking large game.
> Basically the choice of calibres depends upon what you are going to use it for - type of game, terrain (jungles or flat land) etc. Lighter bullets are affected by breeze & blades of grass / leaves while heavier ones can to an extent overcome this.
> Finally the .303 & .315 are not that popular abroad - their preference is .275 / 30.06 / .300 magnum etc.
> Hope this clears some of your queries regarding the .303 & .315!
Cheers :D
