Yellowstone Park 6
I took this picture to show how the forest fires of 1988 came right down to the Lake's shoreline.
When the kids were young, we would rent a boat and take them out to these islands. It is forbidden to go ashore on them, but they are home to a large population of osprey -- fish eagles. All one needs to do is to motor up to the island, cut the outboard motor, and wait. Soon, one will hear a huge splash and, if one turns fast enough, be able to see an osprey with a 30 cm or so cutthroat trout in its claws, winging away to enjoy some fine dining. This show will go on all day, if one cares to stick around and watch. It's a truly impressive sight to watch this!

North Shore, Lake Yellowstone.
This is a few miles away from the Lake basin, heading toward the East Entrance of the Park. As you see, it is pretty rocky and barren in this area, and the June snow is still melting.
This sequence is further along the road to the East Entrance. Most of the Park is like this -- wild, and without much in the way of evidence of humanity. These pictures have only been a drop in the bucket compared to what can be seen in Yellowstone: It was a 4 hour visit. Even staying in the Park for a week will hardly leave time to explore very much of it, despite a busy schedule. Having visited the Park for years, a week or two at a time, I can attest to this! It is an amazing place!

Here we are, at the end of the line!

Just outside of the Park, I saw little Miss Moose munching away in the thicket, and pulled over to snap her pic.
