How to Calculate FPE in Air Guns

Post by brihacharan » Wed Jun 29, 2011 11:53 am

Hi Guys,
> Here's some more Gyan!

How to Calculate the Power of Your Air-gun
>When it comes to air-guns, many people regard it as a TOY. However, the air-gun is a very viable tool for hunting and pest control. And one of the things that concern most the air-gunner is the power available from their air-gun.

>There is a simple mathematical equation that you can use to determine the power that your air-gun develops. Here is the equation:

>Mass (wt of the pellet in grains) X velocity (in feet-per-second) squared, divided by 450240 (gravitational constant)

>Now what does that mean? Simply put, you multiply the square of the velocity of your pellet, with the weight of your pellet. Then divide by 450240, and you have your FPE (foot pounds energy).

>Example:
• Velocity of your pellet say is 750fps
• Weight of the pellet say is 14.5gr
• Then FPE = 750 x 750 x 14.5 divided by 450240 = 18fpe

>You need a chronograph in order to determine the accurate speed of your pellet. Many air-guns are tested with the lightest ammo available, and the advertising will state the speed as an impressive marketing tool.

>Don’t be taken-up with these claims. Experienced and knowledgeable GURUS often state that “Don’t go for power” – but go for accuracy.

>0.177 cal pellets have always an edge over 0.22 cal pellets due the lightness in the weight of their pellets – while 0.22 cal pellets due to their comparatively heavier pellet weight travel slower than 0.177 cal pellets. Nevertheless, the FPE is always higher in 0.22 cal pellets.

>The ideal fps for 0.177 cal for good accuracy is between 750 & 800, while for 0.22 cal it is between 650 & 700. These form an ideal combination of velocity & power.

>Believe it or not there is something called ‘Natural Frequency’ that exist both in animate & in-animate objects. So look after your gun – fondle it, caress it and look after it – you’ll be surprised how it will perform – Happy Shooting!

Cheers

Hi Pratik,

> Tks for the link - very helpful for new members / novices.
> Did U notice in the link given by you - most Top Grade Air Guns have an FPE of 14 to 18 - which means that 'Accuracy' is what an Air Gun should provide and not mere power.
Cheers

Accuracy with a FPS of around 600-700 will be my main target while getting my IHp tuned... I am not much keen on having a high power gun.. All i want is making groups at 25mtrs or so with my IHP.. Hope i get the outcome...

Briha,
it is a very enlightening write up.
But do you not think a FPE between 9-10 is sufficient enough for pleasure shooting ?

Hi Basu,
> Ofcourse - 10fpe would be ideal if you're confined to target shooting @ max 10mtrs.
> Beyond 10mtrs the pellet will lose aprox. 3 to 4 fpe for every 4mtrs.
> Good enough for a knockdown upto 15mtrs.
Cheers ROTFL

Briha,
here in some post, some member has written about his R-7 which produces 580 fps in .177,
that is close to 6 FPE , yet he could knock down any varmint within 20 mtr.How come ?
