Interesting Shotgun

Post by herb » Sat May 21, 2011 3:26 am

I was at my gunsmiths http://www.nickmakinson.com place last week and he showed me an interesting gun he had made . The gun is made for a left eye dominant right hand shooter.

He kindly allowed me to dismantle the gun and take a few pictures.

You can see that even the lock plates are curved...

Thanks Herb -- I find the curved tangs and especially the lock plates interesting, indeed!

:agree: ...the radiused lock plate is a first time for me. Very interesting, not forgetting the fact that the gun itself is beautiful though a bit awkward :)

Herb,

Thanks for posting and the shotgun looks like a well made gun and good job on stock.I would love to know more about Hale & Hunt gunmakers.

The Cross eye or Fully cast off stocks are not very common these days because they are clumsy to handle and because the recoil is not in direct line quiet uncomfortable to shoot and not to mention much more expensive to produce.

The people try to adopt other techniques if there master eye is left. Attaching little opaque discs on barrels or action to protrude between left eyes and muzzle, closing left eye partially so that right eye takes control. Some use brim of hat or cap to obscure the angle of vision of left eye, some hold the barrels with left hand turned around so that knuckle and thumb blocks muzzle end from line of vision Cogswell and Harrison even came out with a special hand guard to do the job of blocking the muzzle end for better alignment for the shooter many shooters witch to shooting from left side completely.

Herb, very interesting and well made gun. I have seen a couple of crossover SXS.But not one of this quality and a sidelock to boot! Very nice engraving too. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I have seen a few guns with cross over stock but never a gun which was made for a right hand left eye dominant shooter from scratch including the metal work (action, tang, trigger guard etc.)

The problem is with a normal gun with cross over stock, the stock can be straightened or replaced and the gun can be used by a right hand or left hand shooter. In this case nothing can be done to fit the gun for a different shooter. It will be near impossible to sell such a gun.

So true.
I am sure the gentleman who spent all the money in getting it made, has no intention of doing so .

Interesting if you notice this recoil pad most of times it is that thick to adjust LOP mostly second hand guns and in this case since the shotgun was absolutely bespoke and made to fit the recoil pad is thick not because of adjustment but because crosseye stocks kick harder as I mentioned earlier because recoil is not in direct line.
