Which is a better Rifle BRNO MOD 1 or MOD 2?

Wanted to know which is a better .22lr a Brno Mod 1 or Brno Mod 2..

From a mechanical point of view they are the same. So, your decision as to which is "better", should be based on stock fit, and balance. And intended use. Whichever you like more, is the better. Cheers.

Go for Mod.5 if you can lay your hands on it. It has best of both Mod.1 and 2 features. Modern bolt of Mod.2 and a shorter barrel length and folding leaf and bead sights of mod.1 for handiness.

In my search for a .22 Brno rifle, I have come across Model 1 and Model 2.

Nowdays, the lowest price of decent condition Model 1 rifle starts from 1.75 L and Model 2 from 2.1 L.

Kindly advise which model to buy for practicing target shooting at 50 Mtrs. considering similar condition and price gap of 35K.

The Mod1 has a sporter stock and express rear sights while the Mod2 has a broader fore end on the stock and tangent sights. Mechanically they are the same. The question is application of both the rifles. For field gunning the Mod1 is better suited while the Mod2 is better for target shooting.

Comparing the Model #1 and the Model #2 
(Drawn mainly from a post by Old 39A User)

The Model #1 dates from 1945. The Model #2 was a revised and supposedly an improved edition brought out in 1954. I and some others debate whether it is really an improved edition or just different to meet a purpose. (see more in Paul’s thread to this effect.)

Some basic differences are listed below, but Paul as nicely addressed this I his excellent post. (Please keep in mind much of this was written a couple of years ago.

1. The Model #1 has two different types of double stage military triggers...one that was adjustable and one that was not. (More like the 513 /Farmer.) The Model #2 has what some say to be a more “sophisticated Model 70 Winchester type break away trigger”. This is essentially the CZ 452 of today. Many say hold the #2 as superior but this is a matter of opinion and not mine. I hold the Model #1 as the consummate ultimate 22 LR Sporter.

2. The Model #2 has three gas escape ports on the receiver and bolt. The Model #1 has none. Model #2 appears to be better...especially if as Paul points out…you are in a dandy desert. For 99% of the time for those of us in the US, this will never come in to play one way or the other.

3. The Model #1 has a three leaf rear sight with graduations for fifty, seventy five and one hundred yards (meters). The Model #2 has a tangent rear sight with 12.5 yard graduations from 25 to 200 yards. Once again, the Model #2 seems superior. (Again a personal preference and I can’t quite explain it but I love my classic tri-leafs immensely more.)

4. The Model #1 has a safety on top of the bolt somewhat like the original Model 70. The Model 2 has a safety lever that sticks out to the side and is easier to use if the rifle is scoped. Old 39A loves this fact on the Model 2. Me? (Some say the Model 2’s is superior...Again for some reason I love the clean feel and lines of the #1’s safety being swept back when in the fire mode. don’t know why. I just like it straight in line when in fire. Personal preference maybe more related to familiarity than anything.)

Old 39A User: “Notwithstanding this, the workmanship on the old Model 1s was superb, as it also was on the older Model 2 rifles. I wouldn't hesitate in buying an old Model 1 rifle. In fact, I own 1949 vintage Model 1 and a 1956 vintage Model 2 and cannot decide which I like best.”

Brno Model #2 (452)

I will defer to address this at a later date as this area alone could become very large. However as to the model’s genealogy I will post only a line I came across sometime ago. I will address it in depth later.

Model 2 >> Model 2E >> Model 452-2E >> ZKM 452-2E.

On 2E’s...Basically the same as today's CZ 452 LUX but they had a bit more Brno oversight then a hair better quality. It was made in the 1990’s. Anyway...if you come across something like this, it's pretty cool but I don’t feel that you should pay too heavy of a premium on it.

If your CZ MODEL 2 ( 1970) is in good shape, value can be twice of today manufactured CZ ZKM 452. Model 2 was design and developed by Brno Arms and manufactured by them til 1966. Design and manufacturing was then transferred to Brno Arms sister division and manufactured by CZ under BRNO license and quality supervision of BRNO ARMS inspectors. Rifle is all steel, no plastics, trigger mechanism is the same for both
